EB Slinky Cobalt Flats

Christian551, 28.07.2015
1) Unpacking / initial contact
Purple stockings. Well. They will not please everyone. ;)
The strings are EB-typical perfect processed. The surface is quite dull. I suspect that the outer winding is not flat wire, but round ground wire, as with the DR Flats.
The package contains instructions on how to draw the strings. OK, I'll do it.

2) First Dry Test
The Cobalt Flats feel pleasantly tight, but not as hard as Fender Flats or Rotos. String tension is on the level of the EB Slinky Rounds, which I very much welcome. Due to the dull surface, slides are not as easy to handle as with "typical" flats. As far as that is concerned, the superglatten La Bellas are still the first choice.
The strings are actually surprisingly brilliant in tone, since marketing has not promised too much. And there is also a bit of growl. Not so clear as with the Slinky Rounds, but more than most other flats.

3) Tape test
Acoustic set with 2 guitars, drums and bass, in-ear monitoring.
The basic tone of the Cobalt Flats is low-key and compact. This tone is very good in the mix.
The (deep) basses are less prominent than the rounds. Brilliants and presences, on the other hand, are abundant, which also contributes to good audibility in the mix. Since this was a jazzy / folky acoustic setting in this particular case, I tried to add a bit more warmth to the bass sound by turning the soundblende back. I did not like the Slinky Cobalt Flats as well as with the Slinky Rounds. The flats are always "forward" due to their low-key character and do not lie so nicely under the guitars. But I can very well imagine that this sound fits well in a (Punk) Rock or Heavy Chapel. Or on a fretless bass - I bet he would sing with these strings like a nuns' choir.

4) My personal conclusion
Since I play almost as exclusively my 64er Preci, the must be so stratified that I can play with it in the acoustic AND in the rock band. I can not do this with the EB Slinky Cobalt Flats. Evil: they lack some warmth. So I'll stay with the Slinky Rounds. The Slinky Cobalt Flats first wander into the drawer until I have a fretless ...;)

A rogram for fingers and ears!

B_Louvion, 23.08.2017
Tested a few months ago on my PB, the verdict is without appeal: for the flat filet, they send!
They are much brighter than standard flat fillets, almost as much as round fillets I would say! Well, the attack is still different and the feeling of flat nets is there, it's still what is asked at a time.
I loved playing on these strings, except that they did not last long enough for my taste: a rope broke after about four months.
I did not buy these strings (I wanted to try something else) but it is clearly a good reference for a person who wants to access the comfort of flat nets without sacrificing his highs!

Without strings, guitars and basses produce no sound, yet most players know very little about them.
