Epiphone Wildkat - natural colour

Daniel7436, 03.02.2015
Epiphone Wildkat . natural colour. This 24 3/4" scale guitar construction wise and hence tonewise is more like a very heavily chambered Les Paul (although slightly bigger) than an economical Epiphone Casino even though they are both non-solid guitars sporting two dogear P90s. It is not fully hollow like the Casino nor has a central block like a 335 so the P90s are also floating like the Casino although the body is mahogany not maple.

The finish is pleasing to the eye and the controls are like those of a Gretsch (one master volume, two individual volumes and one master tone) with a three way toggle where it would be on a Les Paul. The guitar is well constructed and sports a nice Bigsby B70 and would be perfect if it wasn't for three significant changes that you need to make:
(1) The P90s are too hot for most types of music IMHO. They would need rewinding or replacement for most serious players. The pair does not include a RWRP pickup. Optional.
(2) The Bigsby is set too close to the bridge and so the break angle is too severe making it have a very stiff vibrato action. You will need to raise the front of vibratro with some washers or nuts like I did. Easy fix.
(3) Many owners have reported a very dark or dull sounds with little high end. Tests have shown, and I can vouch to this, that this is caused by the use of too long lengths of cheap shielded wires that add capacitance and therefore losses of high frequencies. This is a must fix but not easy. Enjoy fishing through the f holes and pickup routes for those pots and switches!

Make these changes and you have a guitar worth 3-4 times its crazy low price.

It comes with the reliable Grover tuners, has a nice neck for fast playing, jumbo frets, ebonized rosewood fingerboard, and overall has somewhat of a rockabilly look to it.

Great sound from a low cost guitar. Perfect playability combined with awesome looks and quality craftsmanship. I really recommend this guitar to everyone considering a semi-hollow body. Original Bigsby with cool sounding Alnico V P-90's. If you're looking for a combination of value-for-money, great sound, great looks and neat construction... this is it!
