Epiphone The Dot CH

Electric Guitar

The guitars of the Gibson ES series are meanwhile all classics and it's hard to imagine Blues and Rock music without them. But you can also see them in jazz, because despite Les Paul-Elektrik, the semi-acoustic guitars always keep a good portion of 'wood' - and that means acoustic timbre in the sound.

The Epiphone Dot is based on the ES 335, and has a continuous sustain block under the strings. This makes it much more patient with feedback and also very useful for distorted sounds; known for example from Alvin Lee, but also from jazz rock greats such as Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour. The term 'Dot' refers to the dot inlays on the neck in contrast to the block or crown inlays more commonly found on Gibsons.

As close as I'm ever gonna get to the 335
DanielPicon, 06.05.2017
I always daydreamed about having a Gibson 335, and to be honest never saw myself realistically owning one, because they are freaking expensive.

Somehow life was already good to me at one point, and I was able to get my hands on a Gibson les Paul gold top joe bonamassa model, so well, my Gibson cravings are satisfied.

However I still had this 335 craving, once I saw this epiphone version and how similar it was to the real thing, I immediately looked it up on YouTube, and I found this comparison video by Andertons. Danish Pete makes this Dot sound like magic. Basically him playing John Mayer on this guitar made me buy it straight away.

I received the guitar within 5 days Germany-Estonia. Perfect conditions, looked stunning, I still look at it all the time, such an object of beauty, plays really well too.

For 300 Euros this is just absolutely a no-brainer.

BUY IT!!

Plays great, poor electronics
BrianD, 09.06.2013
This guitar comes set up with a low action and the strings are close enough to the neck for easy barre chording as well as fast lead guitar parts. The hardware is very good quality. The guitar come set up practically to my preferences and required very little work. The tuners work very well and the guitar is able to keep a tune for a long time, even when I am changing to different tunings regularly.
There are, however, a few negative aspects of this guitar. The jack was always very loose and at one point is fell inside the hollow body of the guitar. I was unable to remove it and had to send it back to Thomann who returned it with a new jack.
The bridge pickup is very good but the neck pickup sounds pretty bad. Unless you want to spend more money upgrading the guitar than on the guitar itself it may be worth your while buying a different guitar. For a beginner or intermediate player it's great, it looks beautiful and it's one of the best epiphones I've played but a serious player may want to look elsewhere.

This guitar really surprised me
Doc Roc, 21.06.2020
Got this for my nephew, (his first electric guitar) and for the price range its in, it really surprised me, build quality and finish is very good, I did have to set it up properly (action, intonation & neck relief) once that was done it played beautifully, and with some tasty tones available from the pick-ups the Dot has a lot to offer, for a 335 vibe, this guitar is a no brainer.......fantastic value for money,

Classic vibe at a great price
Peter9082, 30.01.2014
The first thing I you'll notice when opening the box is how fantastic this guitar looks. The transparent cherry finish is stunning and you feel you are getting a lot of guitar for your money. You will never mistake this for a Gibson and on close inspection you can see that the binding on the body is done with paint and there are tiny imperfections where the red and cream binding paint join but you really need to look closely to see these. For the price the finish is very good indeed.

Tonally the pickups are pretty good but not outstanding. They will get you into the ball park sounds of a 335 but lack the character you get from a Gibson. All the electrics work well and there's a good sweep of both volume and tone from the controls.

This is a very playable guitar and the neck feels very nice in the hands. The only small annoyance when playing is the tuning stability could be better. I think this would benefit from an upgrade to the tuners but for now I'm happy enough to re-tune at regular intervals.

I must also compliment Thomann's service on this product. The first guitar I received had some small cracks in the paint work and I wasn't 100% happy with it. A quick email to Thomann and they were happy to take it back and send me a new one - great service!!

Overall this is a great option if you want that 335 vibe at an affordable price. It's not perfect but as I said you get quite a lot at an affordable price.
