High Gain and Bluesy Goodness :)

Angelus502, 22.03.2015
Where to start I've had this for a month or so now.. Modern sounding 4 channel high gain preamp - Ill start with the channels... My Eq setting are pretty flat

Clean - Very clean, Id like a bit more chimyness and tubey warmth from this channel, but I haven't got a tube replacement for the V1 position I prefer over the stock tube ( the stock ENGL long plate here isn't bad ). Dry its a little lacking, but with a bit of verb, chorus, or delay it warms up nicely and sounds killer.

Clean Hi Gain - Some nice break up, not a channel I use much.

Lead - I'm running a TC electronics G major in the loop with a +5db mid boost on my stock setting for this channel rather than using the mid contour switch, and its blues goodness to die for :D Also great for a semi dirty dry channel to practice and hear every nuance or mistake.

Lead Hi Gain - More than enough gain for whatever kinda metal you wanna play :D I'm running a cheap JJ tube in the V2, its a bit more gritty and middy, and gets rid of the top end fizz with the stock tube.

The 1 Watt power amp sounds very nice with a Harley Benton G212 Vintage ( I was blown away with how good this combination sounded when I set it up to test ). Perfect without a external power amp for practice.

Headphone out is noisey. Im not sure if i got a bad unit, or if its my headphone impedance.

Built like a tank. FX Loop works great. I haven't tried the cab emulated output.

I did buy a midi switcher for the 4 relay switches, but I haven't bothered using it. I use the 2 switches for channel and low/hi gain from the G major. However I have found I don't need to switch the bright, mid contour, and bypass, I can EQ with the G major ( mid boost sorted ), and on the clean channel I pretty much just leave the bright switch on.

Overall a killer preamp, I'm selling my modeling gear as it just doesn't compare. 99% of the time I only use 6 tones ( I wanna sound like me, not try and copy 100 other tones ), I use a clean, a thick chorus clean, bluesy, rock, super high gain, and a lead or 2, the E530 does it all with a couple of basic FX.

It has a modern sound to it, so more voiced towards a tight detailed sound rather than warm and fuzzy.

The Engl in Direct-Recording: Ein L we

Andreas939, 20.09.2011
I have the Engl now several weeks in the recording context checked and since I am still as enthusiastic as in the beginning, I have to write a review.

I run the Engl as a typical homerecordler, who is in the tougher metal range on the road. The signal goes through the direct outputs (not the box simulator outputs!) Directly into my ESI ESP 1010. In the sequencer, I put then with Voxengo Boogex a Cab Impulse drauf. It is mainly played with my Schecter-Seven-string with active EMGs. My review describes the Engl so in direct recording. In the live I had not yet.

I have years with my POD XT and was always quite satisfied with the quality, but when I hunted the Engl for the first time through my modest KRK Rokit 5-Intercept, I thought only "leak me on the A ***, the part BRIGHT! " And how! Subsequently it had to be shaken and begged ...

In principle - and I was really surprised - I can find a suitable sound for every style. The four-band equalizer in the lead channel reacts wonderfully directly and it is possible to realize all common rock, crunch and high-gain sounds. From AC / DC via Motörhead to modern Devildriver or Trivium sounds. Together with the right cab impulses, everything seems to be in the thing from Marshall to the Boogie and nevertheless he has this "Englige", this impertinently middle, roaringly fitting perfectly into the mix. Simply amazing ...

The clean channel is clean, even with high gain settings. With single coils or strat model, a pleasure! Crystal clear, on request even rattling but always in the middle with the typical Engl-Punch. So must be! As shown in Fig.

Although I'm talking about the Engl - as already mentioned - with Cab impulses, he still sounds superdynamic, no comparison to the POD, and I can not imagine that the new HD series has really changed. The signal is so dry and loud, that I do not even have to compress more to get a fat sound.

Frequency superimposition in mass and mix? Not with the English. Due to its central character, it almost fits into the mix itself, assuming the appropriate setting. You can, of course, tear it open fully, in order to dive into mortician fields.

All this, however, assumes the right impulse and the right guitar! I've been playing the guitar for 19 years, and now I know that the sound always sounds as good as the worst member of the string - and often enough, it's the guitarist himself ;-) Many kids believe you only need the particular amp or even That guitar or pickup and buy one is the goal of his ideas. No. Everything must match. And the Engl does his job as a preamp in the signal chain more than good. Everything fits: Robust and high-quality processing, easy to use, perfect in sound.

For me, the Engl is the best purchase I have made for my homerecording environment for a long time. I can only advise anyone who wants a really good guitar sound on his recordings and does not have the possibility of "loud" recording over real boxes to grab the Engl and Cab impulses.
