EMG Thunderbird Pickups: The Savings of my Gibson EB 2013

capmaster, 28.05.2013
The Gibson EB 2013 has a solid basic substance, but because of the very strong magnetic field of its new and untarnished pickups, the sound cleanliness suffers considerably. Since the millings in the corpus of the EB 2013 correspond to those of the Gibson Thunderbird basses, I have installed two EMG TB-HZs and extended the Gibson circuit again. With two of the three push-pull potentiometers I can now operate the EMGs either serially or in parallel. In the case of the series operating mode, the third switches one of the coils into a mixed state, which in the basses acts as a humbucker and transitions to the heights into the single coil mode. I chose the partial resonance somewhat higher than Gibson.

All potentiometers have 500 kOhm logarithmic double-throw switches. Two 22 nF capacitors are used for the tap-changer circuit, one 47 nF on the tone plate.

The result can be seen and heard. If there were not EMG HZ on the housings, one would think that the pickups belonged to the Gibson EB 2013 anyway. Depending on the turn and switch positions they bring everything over, what can be done on a four-string electric bass. The total thirteen basic settings of the finished circuit can be transferred almost infinitely into one another.

The bass thunders, groans, growls, flushes, nails, naps, squirts, smacks, snaps, chirps, and sirens, as one would like. Thanks to the AlNiCo steel composite beam magnets, the resonances of the pick-ups are rather wide and flat in all switching positions with the recording unit turned upwards, as well as all the notes being transmitted evenly. No sound is required, there is no sound, which is also proof of the good basic design of the Gibson EB 2013.

Regardless of whether the two guitarists are doing lashing undistorted chords or a heavy high-gain board, my bass goes through without smearing anything else. With the EMG TB-HZ I always find the right gap in the spectrum. Well, that HZ draufsteht, and that I know exactly that there is no battery or other voltage supply. Otherwise I could at the latest with the very bright sounding attitudes mean that active electronics in the game.

My original concerns about whether two equal pickups fit well into the neck and bridge position have dispersed the EMG TB-HZ. If the former is a little lower, the levels are the same, and sound everything fits perfectly.

People, buy the Gibson EB 2013 to spin prices where it still exists, and order a set of these pickups! You will not regret it. Oh, a disadvantage of the EMG TB-HZ, but the delivery time. They are notoriously sold out, but please patience: the wait is always worth it. Besides copying flat-wound strings, the ones on a Gibson EB 2013 with roundwounds can do just about anything. That's why I now have one, which is covered with flatwounds, and of course retrofitted with two EMG TB-HZ.

Ultra easy installation, versatile sound

Yves_uke, 17.12.2017
I'm not a great microphones specialist but I can compare it to those of my other two bass: a jazz bass mexico 2017 and a Cort upgraded with Entwistle XN.
I mounted this microphone EMG on a bass "homemade" headless travel with a very narrow body but a standard tuning fork 34 ''. The sound is typed in any way, I would say neutral. It is placed in the middle position, slightly towards the bridge: it is perfect for working on the headphones (with Amplug bass) and sounds great on my little Hartke of 25W to work at home. Not tested on a "real" amp.
Positive side: ultra simple assembly with everything that is pre-wired and small plastic connectors that make life easier. No welding, no headache. Note: this is not indicated anywhere but the capacitor is already included on the tone potentiometer (it is a tiny surface component, but it is the taf).
I find the look sober and rather classy, ??like "soap bar".
