57 for the win!

kgusarov, 20.04.2017
I've had a lot of experience with SD Blackouts and always liked those more than EMG's. However this one really changed my opinion. It delivers nice clean sound and a heavy punch with the distortion turned in.

Pros:
- No soldering is needed. I really like it that way.
- Natural clean sound.
- Rich harmonics.
- Versatility.

Cons:
- None so far.

EMG 81 sound and visual enhancement

Stefan2108, 08.07.2014
Optics and processing:
The 57 is very elegant in brushed black chrome. The color is a little bit brighter than on the - on the 8.7.14 current - pictures of Thomann. Fingerprints are only easy to see, and when they do, they do not bother very much because of the brushed pattern. However, with me after a few weeks scratches of strings and picks on the humbucker became visible. These are not like a macke in a otherwise perfectly painted guitars, but lend the pickup over time a rather vintage-like appearance. In addition, the pole pieces do not sit perfectly in the middle of the cut holes in the stainless steel cap. Overall, I can give good conscience 4/5 stars for the processing, as the EMG 57 otherwise seems very valuable. Also the enclosed cables and solid / full rotating potentiators are to date (2 months) faultless.

Sound:
I installed the EMG 57 in an ESP Strat with Erlenkorpus, maple neck and ebony fingerboard. In the same guitar was an EMG 81. In the meantime, she has already EMG 85 (Jawohl, a 85er at the footbridge, should be tried!), Duncan SH4, SH6, DiMarzio MegaDrive, Gibson DirtyFinger and Kinman PAF + Astound. The changes and tests were due to the fact that I guess the guitar as very very powerful, but the sound of many of the above pickups was too sharp and sharp to me and partly without foundation in the basses came along.
The EMG 57 has this round bass fundament, similar to an EMG 85. In addition, it sounds less sterile and flat like a dirty finger or 81er. For this he remains without shrill heights through his grave / biting "Grit" - I hope it is understandable, which I mean by it :) - in the middle and high frequencies enforceable and in the band context good audible. For distorted chords a force. I can not hear my opinion, as some would like to formulate, but chords remain clear and strong and do not become queasy.
Unfortunately, this harsh enforcement force is largely retained in the control of the volume potentiometer, which is why this potentiometer comes a little closer to its actual purpose, namely the pure volume control system. With a distorted sound a gig and only with the volume poti to produce a clean sound, as an SH4 or better still a SH1 / 2 can, is not the strength of the EMG 57. Unfortunately, this can be as bad as an EMG 81 ... with the 85er but this is quite passable.
Also the distortion of the 57er already at the entrance stronger than all the pickups ever installed in my guitar. Cleansounds are only possible with "ultraclean" amp settings, otherwise you get fast harp-sounding centers and highs, even though the bass always sounds beautifully.
I have to pull a star for the sound, because there are many pickups that give a more comfortable clean and crunch sound. Since the distorted sound pounds over many doubts and vigorously, the pickup agrees me overall and for my applications in the context of a metal band very satisfied.
