Well known EMG-Quality

Bushman, 17.02.2014
Great Pickups! I use them in my 5 String tuned in Drop-C with Stainless-Steel-Strings. The Neck-Pickup has a veeery deep Sound and gives you a fat low-End, the Bridge-Pickup is full of Mids and Highs with really much Attack.
I use these Pickups with a Pu-Balance-Poti and turn it a little bit to the Bridge Pick-Up. With a little Bit of Bass-Boost and High-Cut at the EQ of my Amp i get exactly the Sound i want: A loud Low-End with punchy Mids. (I play Metal, mostly). Compared to the Pick-Ups that i used before the EMGs (some China-Stuff i bought with a "Build-Your-Own-Bass"-Kit) the EMG-Tone is very clear and I hear myself much better on Stage than before.

Good humbucker, in which the coils can also be operated as single coils!

Tone Hunter, 31.08.2012
I wanted to remain passive and I decided because of the connection possibilities for this EMG 40HZ.

My circuit is as follows:
- I can switch the coils individually or in parallel for each pickup.
- The cartridges to each other I can switch individually, parallel and serial.

As you can see, I use the individual pickups so not like "classical" humbucker. I chose for sound reasons against it and also wanted to avoid the loudspeaker oscillation with a circuit coil front - serial - coil rear (serial is significantly louder).
Because I can switch the pickups to each other serially, however, I can still produce real humbucker sounds (Pickup 1 coil front to pickup 2 coil back and pickup 1 coil back to pickup 2 coil front).

Now to the sonic possibilities (with this circuit) and the qualities of this pickup:

The individual coils sound very good. The pickups sound, internally connected in parallel (only one pickup in operation), roughly the same as the mixture of the two individual coils, but as expected not quite as differentiated.

The sounds with parallel-connected pickups, if only one coil is switched per pickup, are also very good. So I get this very characteristic jazz bass sound. The coils must of course also still in the correct position sit (me on a 64-jazz oriented and had to mill for it).
If one of the pickups (or both) turns both coils parallel, it also sounds like the mix again, but also a little more undifferentiated.

In the serial connection of the two pickups I can get real humbucker sounds and of course some other variations. The serial sounds are generally louder, have a "compressed" sound with less treble and more deep. With the result that it sounds much more undifferentiated.

If you run these pickups with individual reels, like single coils, there are practically no problems with interferences. Also a clear indication of quality work.

My conclusion:
In the course of the time I have already installed a lot of pickups (eg Fender, Nordstrand, Bartolini, active EMG). These passive EMG 40 HZs are tonal and qualitatively exactly as good as the best copies I had so far in my hands.

The EMG 40HZ is extremely flexible because you can separate the coils individually. The strengths of this pickup for me personally are quite clearly in the pickup-spanning parallel operation of individual coils.
Please note that the signal is much quieter than with normal (serial) humbucker operation. The single coils are quieter (about as loud as real Vintage SingleCoils) and in order to be able to use this great sound, the following amplification equipment may need to be adjusted.

But I would not have said that the EMG 40HZ operated as humbucker is no good! This pickup can also be operated "classical" with the competition and the differences are more a personal taste, than a quality question.

Conclusion: These EMGs are really good, if necessary extremely flexible and for the price a real bargain.

And finally, the well-meaning: If the bass is no good, the pickups will not synonymous.
