love-hate relationship

Michael665, 06.08.2018
I had the Octatrack in the first generation (even several times) and it connects me a certain love-hate relationship with this device. So now again ;-)

The Octatrack Mk2 has been slightly improved in various places in the operation, which does not mean that the device would now be completely intuitive, if you do not even know it. However, if you are already a bit at home in the electron world, you will be able to cope faster and, unfortunately, there are no devices that can be used flexibly to this day. Be it a drum machine / Groovebox, Sample Verwursteler, effects unit, variable mixer, DJ deck, live looper, MIDI step sequencer, etc. everything offers the OT good possibilities and remains a device where you have to know what you want and in the case of non-ready-to-use material, it immediately starts to be the big producer (if I compare this, for example, with MASCHINE or MPC Live). Here is really your own creativity is in demand and the device offers a large playground.

The biggest hurdle for me was / is always the memory organization and not infrequently, unfortunately, I have lost good ideas because I have not yet saved at a suitable place. In the meantime, I am more experienced and know the traps and at least the Mk2 version has a little less.

The device is now almost 10 years old in its basic function, but there is still no real substitute for it, and in fact, I trust most of the electron itself to create a true follower. But they should first get overbridge overbridge ...

What is not the Octatrack?

A sampler in the usual sense, where you can play (multi) samples as instruments on a keyboard (the older ones among us know that.) The Octatrack has - as the name implies - eight stereo sample tracks. Single tracks can also be monophonic, as a simple sample synth play, but who puts on something worthwhile, should better on MPC Live or (not entirely without a computer) on MASCHINE avoid where every track (there are of these devices without End) also polyphonic, even with multisamples, can play instruments.

The most fitting comparison with the Octatrack is for me still an (older) Ableton Live version, limited to 8 sample audio and 8 MIDI tracks - there are many parallel ones.

Sounds limited? Yes sure, but sometimes restriction is also creative ...
