A great synth I'm going to use for years to come
ofca, 16.06.2020
Dreadbox here provides a deceptively simple synth - 2 oscillators, two filters, two LFO's and a reverb. But the range of sounds and strange rhytms and modulations you can achieve with this thing is going to entertain me for years to come. It excells at drones, but is capable for more standard bass and leads sounds. I find it very unique.

That being said, two more things come to mind - the envelopes aren't the snappiest and the LFO modulation can't be synced to an external clock. Some would say these are the cons, but for me they are just part of the synth - the Nyx is not designed to be very precise, and (like the Greek diety it is named after) lends itself more to the ephermal/experimental/sound design/surprised-in-a-good-way side of things.

Surprises In A Box
PhiLanalog, 30.12.2020
I had the opportunity to evaluate this machine from the land of myhthology and logic, the realm of half gods back then. Now we are facing another divinity, up to mankind ot pull the patch strings. Using the switches, sliders and knobs takes some learning curve. Some of these react nervous, others react calm. Lots of character in the user interface. Features are better than you'd expect from a single oscillator analog synth. Especially the reverb, that really modulates the sound rather than repeating it, is a huge surprise, unheard at any other analog synth. The drone knob is a gift straight from Zeus and as an ambient drone noodler I cannot thank enough. The sound, for me, the reverb makes or breaks it. Cheating with external effects, well, I didn't try, as the pure NYX sound is a piece of art. The build quaity, it's good, sturdy as the NYX v1, and a lovely enlarged box. The tiny knobbies could have been a bit bigger, rather than Volca size.

Great Machine But With Weaker Oscillators Than The Original
ferusx, 30.08.2019
Everything from Dreadbox is high-quality stuff in my opinion. Their desktop synthesizers are superb but mostly - they're massive fun! The NYX V2 was extremely appealing to me as I am an owner of the original NYX V1 so when I saw that they NYX V2 was out it felt perfect because I have been using my V1 constantly since I purchased it and now I was looking to double up with the V2 in order to get two of these beats. So I bought one and after having played around with it for a bit I set it up next to my V1 and compared them and I must say that I was a bit disappointed because the oscillators just didn't have the same power as in the V1 according to my ears and that was a shame because it clearly sounded as "number 2" of the two boxes meaning you could tell who was the boss among them. The filters sounds great, though, and the reverb is still that massive aetherial effect as in V1 but the three newly added modifiers to the left on the reverb is really completely meaningless and ou will MAX use that effect in maybe one of your tracks but never a second time.

The new patch bay is a really nice one though and will open up the NYX V2's sound possibilities for sure. I have to say that where the NYX V2 really shines is when the oscillators are synced and you use the patch bay to modify its behavior it really is brilliant! You will love it.

To be honest, I don't think you will be disappointed if you buy this synth unless you have the original to compare it with so just because V1 outshined V2 in my case doesn't mean you will be disappointed. But you should be aware that there is something with those oscillators that makes them sound a liiiittle weak.

The machine has two outstanding 2-pole 12dB/Oct VCFs which you can use in different combinations sounding awesome. The Modulators, which works as either standard ADSRs or as LFOs, don't go very high or very low in LFO mode which some of you will like and others not. The Drone mode is a plus on this one. The extended patch bay is a big plus compared to V1 and unlocks this machine for modular journeys to no end. And the design is as lovely as everything else from Dreadbox.

I actually returned my unit because of what I've written about the oscillators in favor of the Erebus V3 instead. That said, I am happy to have the original NYX but if you haven't then, by all means, buy this machine and you will most probably not be disappointed.
