K162 or K300 - which ones?

Klaus467, 19.07.2010
Comparison tests of the two models I found to my surprise not. And hardly a dealer has both at the same time in stock. So I just ordered both. Thanks to the excellent Thomann service no problem. The result:

Common:
Optics, dimensions and weight are practically identical (fits into every travel bag, approx. 5 kg), loudspeaker equipment and input section very similar or equal.

Both boxes sound very good. Violent basses are of course not included in the case format. But if you run a CD, the result will be very pleasant and round.
Unusual seemed to me the wide angle of radiation. No matter where you are in the room, the sound hardly changes. Nevertheless, the tendency to feedback tended to be rather low. The possibly limited range of the tweeters should not be so serious in practice. For large venues you have to bring other equipment anyway.

Exciting was for me also the question, as a directly connected micro with a line input signal at the RCA input (eg from CD) tolerates. After all, there is only one common volume control, the output stage mixes both signals together. Regulating the line level at the sound source a little down, the two channels fit well together. You can actually work with it. Elegant of course is a mixing console in front of it.

Dates:
The K162 contains a classic A / B amplifier with 65 Watt RMS. The K300 is equipped with modern Class-D technology and bi-amping. The signal is electronically monitored and limited in case of danger of overstating. At almost the same weight, this gives approximately twice the power and a slightly larger frequency range.
In addition, the crossover frequency of the two is quite different.

Hearing Impression:
The difference in sound characteristics is greater than I would have expected. In the K162, the mids have a slightly restrained effect. This has already been described in various tests and forums. In contrast, the K300 boosts the centers strongly. The box appears to be much more powerful than her little sister.

In practice, the volume will probably be a question of the input signal. Between the test-connected Hifi-CD player and the small mp3 player (although headphone output fully turned on) lay worlds! Such minimalettings are not, of course, the pure doctrine, but precisely in these spontaneous-on-the-fly situations these small boxes play their advantages.

So if it is only about the volume, the should perhaps take the K162 and with the money saved a small mixer or an audio interface in front hanging on it to get a clean level. Whether the K300 really is so much louder or only by the mid-lift sound more aggressive I could not judge in my limited premises.

And now - which ones?

Who would use the box as a Bühenmonitor or against other 'noise sources' must fight, should take the K300. It is enormously present and powerful. If the box serves as the sole source of sound, the K162 sounds less discreet, it does not even cut in the ear, if you stand directly in the axis in front and it fully rotates.

Small power pack

ChrisK, 14.06.2010
I was looking for a small, light and powerful active box for use as an acoustic guitar amplifier as well as a monitor for acoustic music, jazz, possibly Accappella.
Very quickly, the dB Technologies K300 crystallized as a desired candidate, which should produce 118 dB sound pressure with only 5 kg. From the frequency response it can reproduce guitar and vocals well (lower frequency limit 70 Hz, -10 dB range for about 82 Hz with the guitar).

The processing is good, there is no rattling, the edges are rounded, the controls are sunk so that they are protected. Since the mains cable is connected by a cold plug, nothing dangles around the box when transporting. The input jacks XLR and jack are parallel, the two RCA jacks are added together. With a TRS jack to XLR (m) adapter, the input signal can simply be forwarded to further active boxes. The volume control affects the sum of all inputs. It is the only control element next to the power switch and the sensitivity switch. There is not an equalizer or sound switch, but I have not really missed, since the basic sound does not provide cause for complaint.
Switching on and off goes silently without crack and plopp. A quiet noise is perceptible but not disturbing.
The K300 is more of a centrally tuned PA box. The basses are severely cut below the cut-off frequency so that they do not reach the amplifiers and loudspeakers. This prevents a low bass, but ensures that the signal stays clear in the limit of the volume and nothing is chattering. There is no mulmt. Guitar and vocals are not circumcised. The heights are rather powerful and direct as silky and airy.
The K300 brings a guitar even more beautiful. Also with singing can the Small points. It sounds very present and has a great range.
As a guitar amplifier for acoustic guitars or as a small singing amplifier, the box is very good. A signal mix without deep bass and bass is very good. For accappella groups, or acoustic bands, which do not amplify the drums and bass over the installation, it is well suited. It is also suitable for mobile voice transmission.

I was able to play against a drums in sessions with a nylon acoustic guitar. The sound was praised very much, and I was also very impressed when another guitarist played my equipment and I could listen. The input sensitivity of the line input may not be sufficient for full output for instrument outputs. I could connect my guitar via XLR and microphone level, then it is enough. If you have a preamp or amp modeller in the path, however, should have enough levels for full modulation.
On an RCF ART310A, which I compared as a reference, it comes however by far not approach, neither in volume nor in the frequency response. It's just a league.

Conclusion:
Who is looking for a small, extremely light and good and loud PA box, is currently not on the K300. If you are looking for the same price class, you will probably also find 8 "boxes that weigh a little more. If you're only looking for the same weight class, you'll probably find cheaper but also less powerful active boxes.

As a monitoring monitor in the studio or as a HiFi box at home I would not use it, but the noise level is too high and the sound character is too middle-heavy.

Addendum: For over 3 years in use, and the box is often transported in the luggage basket on the bike. Also often played quite loud. Only "defect" so far: the volume knob has a scratch. Must have already received something. The volume control has no function disturbances, no misfits or scratches. I still love the crate.

Together with the Zoom G3X, I can amplify small, nylon - western and jazz guitars optimally with small luggage.
