Danelectro DJ14 Fish&Chips

Danelectro DJ14 FishFish & Chips - in German: all the important frequency bands for the guitar - 7 in number - are served here by Danelectro at a price that is probably out of competition. With the DJ14 graphic equaliser, the guitar signal can be precisely trimmed precisely.

If you want to elicit even more distortion from your amp (for example, a pre-set solosound), the signal can be boosted with the level control. The reverse variant works very well. With the equalizer, a clear bass tone (Mostly in the middle slightly lowered - raise the bass and treble) is set up, which then releases the clean amp sounds by dropping the level control. Practically a second channel with sound control for the beloved but somewhat inflexible one-channel amplifier!

A bang for a buck
comaunite, 18.04.2017
Looking through a bunch of EQs for my guitar and going through a bunch of reviews, I've decided to go for this one. It's supercheap, and soundwise is no less than one of those 120+ EUR EQs, they said.

They were completely right! This here helped me shape my tone the way I want, without really being dependent on much shaping on the multitude of amps I get to play on (rehearsals, home, live - you get to play what you get to play). There's only minimal adjustment needed.
The frequency controls go from 100 to 6.4k in 7 bands. It has a level booster, which I also use. It can do tremendous difference, and you can really hear how each of the band controls changes your sound.

There are a few cons:
- The plastic casing isn't sturdy It's probably only gonna last you if you put it on your board, switch it on and keep it that way.
- Controls can be fiddly if you want to be changing them a lot. I just set it up and use it same way for everything.
- The input/output/power ports are pretty close together, so I get to jam my output cable a bit into it.

Verdict: A must have if you're careful.

Essential Tool
AdNauseam, 06.10.2017
This was my third attempt at finding an EQ pedal, principally to shape my sound before going into a POG2 but also as a general utility tool to shape my sound on 6 string electric. My previous buys, a 6 band mxr and a Boss, while functional, tended to introduce unwanted noise, esp if the sliders were boosted rather than cut. The Dano outshines the competition in this respect, it is very quiet in operation and doesn't introduce unwanted hiss.

I was initially sceptical about the plastic case but it has turned out to be very strong in use and the sliders have a nice weight to them while being set in position. The design is a bit funky but it doesn't take up any extra board space and the top mounted jack sockets are easy to use.

Last but not least, the level/boost function is really useful, esp to push my valve amp into overdrive while simultaneously shaping my sound. It's a great tool to have around.

Looks are deceiving
nuferom, 02.06.2017
This is my first EQ pedal ever, therefore I cannot draw direct comparisons. But all reviews I've seen so far seem to suggest it is not as noisy as the industry standard Boss GE (and even less so than its Behringer knockoff). Either way, engaging the pedal in an all-flat curve did not introduce any additional noise or other characteristic to the sound.

The sliders feel better than I expected. The centering snap/click is soft but firm, and mechanically audible ? not restrictive in setting any desired value, even right around the midpoint.

Swapping the battery on these Danelectro 'food' pedals is a bit of a hassle, I know. But I have another one of these still going strong on its original battery since last decade! More proof they are indeed analog.

An EQ pedal may seem unnecessary on your pedalboard at first, but might turn out helpful if not crucial just when you least expect it to. Therefore it definitely won't hurt to have one just around, if not as a mainstay on your board. Especially at this price, being half its main competitor. So long as you don't mind the plastic shell and treat it with respect, that is!

Great competitor to the Boss equivalent
30.09.2016
Bought this pedal as it was recommended in many forums as a good competitor to a Boss EQ pedal.

It was purchased to experiment with shaping post-distortion pedal in my fx chain. Obviously a great tool for changing the character of your guitar tone.

Overall, the only con of the pedal is that the pedal does feel less substantial than the Boss equivalent or MXR EQs, owing mainly to the plastic case. Having said that, I've not read reports anywhere of them failing at any rate that is higher than the competition, so it seems like they hold up well to regular gigging use.

A great pedal to buy to experiment with how an EQ could work for your sound, and a great option if you don't want to commit much money to an EQ pedal.

EQ is perhaps the least noticed of all types of audio processing, but also the most important.
