Evolution 12 years Nord Stage

wulf gäng, 09.08.2017
First of all: I'm glad to be the first to give an evaluation of the new Nord Stage 3 here. For a little more than a week, it's been in my music studio - right next to it is the older brother Nord Stage 88 Classic. Since the first version, which accompanied me absolutely reliably in 2005, a lot has happened. On the one hand. On the other hand, in direct comparison, the first Nord Stage is still an attractive, well-sounding stage piano. Finally, in the most important areas Piano still offers the same samples as today. For me, the new, despite the 12 years difference and the great developments is still an evolution and not a revolution. The revolution was the first Nord Stage.

But now to the new instrument. Everyone has their own highlights here. My highlights are:

- The memory space allows loading of almost all available samples. Although you do not really need live, but makes the selection in peace enormously. The exchange of a 200MB sample takes a few minutes.

- The (B3) organ sounds a tick better than NS Classic, a bit crisp and more vintage - even the Leslie sounds better. The new pipe organ needs no human ;-)

- piano section: Toll, the new layer sounds - ultra fine and dynamic. Also very useful - the new EQ for the pianos, which changes the sound characteristics with simple buttons Soft, Mid, Bright - especially Bright on the electric pianos brings the desired "smack" in the sound. Funny the detune function to layer two piano sounds and detune against each other. But I have not found a really useful sound combo ... yet.

- Program section: The larger display was long overdue. Better overview, more information, faster name-saving. Great is the seamless switching of programs. This is a real comfort gain and it looks much more professional when switching live. The general handling of the switching of sounds live (programs, benches, songs) I have not tried live yet. However, many criticize the lack of function of preselecting new sounds and confirming with just one key. In part, this is by the transition-free switching synonymous no problem. By the way, morphing works with almost every controller. Ultra-flexible.

- Synth: Wow, this one has been changed the most. For me, the sample section is new - great thing, on the other hand, but rather modest sound compared to the great piano and organ section. (No multisamples ...). But the synthesizer in its purest form is really good. The range of possible sounds is extreme - ingenious the Superwaves, which offer a very noble and fat basic sound. I personally miss the small EQ of the Classic. Was it with the NS2 no more. Why? Because the Part EQ may already be occupied by the piano, and when I mix in a synth sound as a layer, it's often too fat to make it sound good in the mix. I used to turn off a bit of bass in the past. Today I have to run the synth in the B-Part to use the second EQ. But good, the synth really sounds much better. Very good also the clear display, which turns on noble when the synth is active.

- Single Effects: This has been the least in the last 12 years. Only the delay is now separate and there are a few additional functions (analog mode, further amp simulations, ...).

- Externally: Quasi unchanged.

- Global FX: The reverb / compressor is now available separately for each part (A and B). So twice. The reverb has more controls and definitely sounds different. But not better (not even worse). Different.

In general, the connection landscape is more luxurious (some already in the NS 2 so), there is a clever music holder and the red of the surface has become a little darker. Looks very noble.

In summary, many new possibilities - including those that make the sound audibly more transparent and fat. In addition, the unbeatable operation without menu orgies - intuitive, especially for people who already own a North. The rest learns it fast. A great instrument - for me as a package the best. Even more flexible than before - there is hardly any style of music that can not tickle the right sounds from the North.

One last thing has not changed in the 12 years: the rather modest factory sounds. Of which one should not be put off, there is often much more ... My tip is here to program the sounds at home on good studio monitors. Most of the time you have to change only minor things live.

The 88s keyboard is traditionally not among the best, although I find that it has improved after all and especially with the organ sounds better play than on the "Ur" Nord Stage.

Clavia, you have done a great job again and I am looking forward to using the beautiful device live.

Addendum after the first appearance: Everything went so well, except for the external section. Here there were two midi interruptions, which were fixed only one reboot of the stage piano. Since the software quality seems to have the today almost usual start quirks. Pity and a downer on the otherwise good device. My software version is 1.04.
