Charvel Jim Root Pro Mod SD1 HH FR E

The feature set was exactly what I was looking for, no tone knob, floyd rose, nice design etc. The guitar sounded nice, suitable for metal, since the sound is very subjective that's all I'll say regarding sound.

The included soft case is average, it didn't feel cheap, but it wasn't of the highest quality either, some of the foam padding had already been squished in transportation, so I don't believe it's suitable for lots of gigging, but is a nice inclusion.

To the guitar itself:
The quality overall seemed good, but not worth the price of 1444€, I have guitars that cost ½ of that and are much better built and finished.
The guitar already had some minor hairline cracks in the finish on the heel of the neck (barely visible), so I was concerned about them getting worse over time.
The finish also seems very thin, and it cannot be cleaned thoroughly, it will attract dirt very easily. So don't expect the nice white to last for long.
(I think Jim Root mentioned this in his interview/demo, he wants the guitar to show its wear).

The frets were leveled, but the crowning job was not done properly, most frets were slightly flat and did not have a nice round profile.
Despite this it played really well, but I got a feeling of slightly used frets.
The guitar was also still slightly dirty from the factory (saw dust), not okay for this price tag, I expect them to take the 30 seconds to wipe it clean.
Additionally one string was broken, but had just enough length to be restrung again.
One last thing about the fretboard, 2 of the white (maple?) inlays had some black scuffs from the tools used and could not be cleaned, slight annoyance, but again not acceptable at this price point.
Otherwise the setup was very good, nice action and intonation, bridge was level in E standard. The truss rod might need a minor tweak depending on the climate, but that's to be expected (mine was 100% straight).

The pickup selector was placed awkwardly for my right hand, it got in the way while playing, but I think I could've gotten used to it over time.
The tape on the pickups had some fraying, they are EMGs so that's another issue but they would have to be cut not to continue getting worse.

The shaved heel helped upper fret access, but is a long way from a neck thru body, I don't understand why Charvel cannot use the shaved heel from their other guitars which is very thin.

Overall the guitar felt like a mid range 700€ guitar with some slight annoyances, but the whole package is definitely not enough to warrant a 1444€ price tag in my opinion.
I've only tried the regular San Dimas 1 guitars in the store, but it didn't feel like a definitive upgrade from those. Maybe a side-by-side comparison would make it more apparent?

If you do decide to get this guitar, make sure you do a thorough quality check and make sure you're okay with the thin matte finish which will show dirt easily.
