Nice keyboard for both beginners and professionals

OguzDemir, 17.10.2016
I wanted a keyboard which has fully weighted 88 keys, nice clavier type instrument sounds, controller features, synthesizer features and low price tag. So, I bought Casio PX-5S as a beginner keyboard player because it covers all my needs. But this thing is not just for beginners! I think experienced keyboard players and professionals can also use this instrument for anything. They must give a chance for it. Here are the reasons:
? Very nice clavier sounds such as acoustic piano, EPs (FM EP, Analog EP, Reed& Dyno EP etc.), different type organs, clavi and percussion instruments (marimba, xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone etc.)
? Steinway piano samples with simulators such as key-off, lid, hammer response, string resonance, damper noise, damper resonance.
? 88 key fully weighted scaled keyboard action with 3 sensors. Ivory and ebony feel on keys. Very sensitive keys allow players play ppp to fff range. Action is superb for this price. (Better then Krome88, FA08, MOXF8 etc. But you must try it for yourself!)
? There is a workaround for drawbar simulations with sliders and knobs! Also it has vibrato/ chorus, rotary, distortion etc. effects for organ sounds.
? Usable as a MIDI keyboard. It is a full fledged controller that can send bank/ program changes to external gear. Even the USB MIDI and Standard MIDI ports are independent.
? It has a pitch bend, modulation wheel, 4 knobs, 6 sliders, 2 pedal inputs for control anything. All of them are configurable and you can assign any parameters to them. Sliders and knobs can control 2 different parameters simultaneously.
? 256 max poly. No worry for dropping notes.
? Small and lightweight. Easy to carry anywhere.
? Effects (reverb, chrous, delay, flanger, phaser, wah, EQ, compressor, tremolo, rotary, distortion and so on...)
? 4 Arpeggios can play simultaneously. Also have phrase memory.
? Tap tempo.
? Sample based synthesizer engine with PC editor. Hex layer feature can play up to 6 different waveforms simultaneously. You can combine 2 hex layer tone and 2 melody tones. (12 waveforms + melody tone waveforms) Also it has filters like cutoff, resonance, attack, release and so on?
? You can share your editings with other users at Casio Music Forums. (Tones, hex layers, stage settings, phrases, arpeggios etc.)
? 4 different tones can play simultaneously . Also you can split the keyboard up to 4 different zones. Split points are adjustable of course.
? Can also run with 8 AA batteries for hours instead of AC power.
? Battery slot covered by rubbery lid. So you can put iPad etc. here.
? 3.5 mm audio in jack and LINE IN jacks.
? 2 headphone jacks, 16 channel mixer.
? Auto detect the polarity of the pedals.
? Stage settings are very useful. All your settings can be stored with them. You can call them instantly with stage setting buttons.
? 2 USB terminals. 1 for PC connection. 1 for USB thumb drive to save settings, tones, record WAV files, overdub tracks with PX-5S sounds etc etc. Can play WAV files from thumb drive.
? Adjustable tuning, scales, stretch tunings?
SOUNDS (my opinions):
? I bought this keyboard for using clavier sounds. Especially clavier type sounds are very nice in my opinion. But dyno EP sounds don?t bark like Fender Rhodes at forte, fortissimo velocities. (Distortion effect can help. ;) ). FM EP sounds are nice. ( But if you want best FM EP, buy Yamaha keyboards. ) Some clavi sounds have key-off simulation.
? It has Steinway piano samples like any other Casio Privia. But with better sound source, more simulations and 256 max poly.
? Organ sounds are enough for me but some people don?t like rotary speaker simulations.
? Others are old Casio keyboard sounds.
? Some elec. guitar sounds are so-so/ fine. But nylon and jazz guitars are really bad. Don?t use them. With editings you can get soft classic guitars but not like Yamaha type realistic guitars!
? Solo wind/ brass instruments are nice. But I can?t say same thing for bad ensemble sounds. Maybe you should try editing with solo instruments via hex layer?
? Drums are nice but dynamism is low.
? Strings are nice for layering piano sounds.
? Synth sounds are nice but not great as Roland or Yamaha.
? Bass sounds are well.
? Other sounds are so-so.
You can listen sounds for yourself from Youtube or Soundcloud?

CONS:
? When you release keys, they make noise. Also some keys will create clicking sounds but this second problem doesn?t show up at all Privias. Privia keyboards are lightweight but their keybed action is probably made by plastic. This will cause these problems I think.
? Doesn?t support half-damper function.
? No expression pedal input. (But you can use MIDI pedals?)
? Unbalanced audio output.
? Keybed action is a bit heavy except for clavier sounds. (But you can adjust velocity to light for solution?)
? No aftertouch
? With white colour and lank buttons, it looks like a toy instrument. (?A bit?)
? No MIDI thru port.
? No microphone/ guitar connection support
? It has only USB MIDI interface, not USB audio interface.
? Works with AC adapter.
? Yes, you can assign transpose, octave shift parameters to sliders or knobs but it doesn?t have buttons for these parameters.
? Metronome only works with phrase recorder. Smartphone metronome apps are nice for solution.
? It has split function but doesn?t have split button on it.
? Its better to buy a sustain pedal then using its own pedal I think.
? If you are holding or sustaining notes, melody tone notes won't be chopped off. They will continue to sound. Hex layer tone notes will cut short when the stage setting is changed. The WAV file should also continue to play, unaffected.

Not so great

Chris1547, 27.11.2013
I was incredibly excited to find something that seemed to be an all round cheaper and better alternative to the other products being offered out there.

Sadly when my Casio PX-5S arrived two keys were broken, their weighted action seemed to have failed and the keys would not return to the correct height.

I also found the sound to be somewhat lacking, I own a Casio digital piano that plays incredibly well and sounds wonderful, I thought I was going to get the same thing with this PX-5S however the keys feel rubbery, the sensitivity is erratic and the main piano sound (along with many others such as Organ and Synth sounds) just does not compete with my digital piano.

The plastic feel to the display is disappointing also, I know almost every keyboard out there has nasty plastic fittings but even a rubbery button here or there makes a world of difference, my Roland Juno D for instance has a much better layout.

I don't want to put down Casio here as obviously I got that "one in a thousand" broken product and my Digital Casio piano is always a pleasure to play however I don't want people to see this and jump at the price tag as I did. I fear I will end up purchasing something like the Roland RD-300 NX for several hundred more just to make sure I get the quality and longevity such an investment warrants.

In short it feels like the "school music room" variant of the stage pianos, I'd save my money and go for something better, after all if you're spending money on a true stage piano then you want to get the best and should not compromise for less.
