Superb

This horn has exceeded my expectations.

I bought this as a backup to my main horn, which is still the position it inhabits, but that is largely down to personal attachment as well as the work I do and how I play. I like a very resistant setup, and the only part that doesn't click for me is the slightly more open ML blow this horn offers. I must stress that this is personal preference. This horn has a fabulous sound, responds with great ease and projects incredibly well. I played it exclusively for 2 months to get a good representation of this instrument, and so far I have led several students to buy theirs from Carol as I believe there is no finer trumpet at this price.

What I liked:

Fabulous sound. Like a Bach 72 but with the compact focus of a good 37.
Very good intonation. Light years better than my Conn 60B.
Incredible stainless steel valves.
Valve ports are plated!
2 tuning slides ('square' and D shaped) - I preferred the square shape as it added resistance and made the slots much more secure. The sound of the D shaped slide was more broad, and I preferred that in a jazz solo context.
Light and heavy springs - I preferred the light springs as the valves were impeccible and responded lightning fast.
Projection and volume with little effort.
Heavy and strong core to a sound rich in overtones.
Fit and finish is as good as any £3000+ horn.
Lacquer was impeccible.
Slides are responsive and fit very well.

The case supplied is practical, has backpack straps and offers excellent protection.

I cannot recommend this horn enough. I'm glad there is a horn I can guarantee my students will last through any professional career and it is at a price point where it is easily affordable, whereas looking back 10 years there was nothing of this standard at this price.

I find the experience of the blow to be very even, with a resounding low register and equally responsive top register (very clean slotting to G over high C and beyond). It blows like an ML horn with a reverse leadpipe setup - I would classify it truly as a medium blow. Slightly more open than a 37ML strad, similar to a 43MLR strad.

I have owned a plethora of horns, which I feel enables me to make a fairly affirmitive and informed review. (I have owned a Taylor, Strads, Yamahas, Olds, Blessings, Conns, Bueschers, A Selmer and played on many many more. Believe me, this Carol 5000 horn is good!!)

I hope this helps anyone potentially on the fence. All the trumpet things, and music things it should do, it does. Comfortable in the hand, strong intonation... You won't go far wrong. Thomann have superb customer service, so if you happen not to like it you do have 14 days to return it!

Budget 8310Z with the D slide on - and a low register for free
Paul.Trumpet, 22.05.2019
Overall, a silly price for a super trumpet. Lacks weight and tonal clarity in the sound otherwise superb for jazz, big band and mucking about on. Mine is not perfect and has a small lacquer scratch and tiny leadpipe ripple. Such moaning is not really wise versus the low price for a trumpet with two tuning slides. Much easier high notes than YLS bell model, also seems faster. Nice balance in the hands, all moving parts slide as if hand fitted and the tuning slides both fit perfectly. The only things I disliked were the waterkey corks and soft valve springs, which actually worsen the valve alignment. I would like the mouthpiece receiver to fit better as it's too deep at 29.4mm, my collection of ancient Bach mouthpieces fit in further and work brilliantly. I might ask Thomann to refund or swap it so I cannot have that modified (although a competent repair shop can safely do it). The mouthpiece gap fit is serious issue though, it strangles the high notes when too big. The stainless valves just fly. A positive and fun instrument, almost good enough to perform some styles on.

Amazing horn for an amazing price!
fdaman, 14.04.2018
I had gotten this trumpet for my son - he's a an advanced student player with a focus on Jazz so this is his review. As stated in the other reviews this horn has a high quality pro build. It has a very open blow and the tone is amazing - super bright when you want it to be and nice deep lows great for his Jazz playing. He appreciates the nice light weight since he plays for hours sometimes in competitions. I can actually hear a night and day difference in his playing compared to his Yamaha student horn - it's really improved his range. The case is cleverly designed with several ways to carry it (back pack is his favorite) and the interior and exterior space can carry even the largest of his music book. It has a thoughtful mouthpiece pocket in the top outer pocket too. And the price was truly amazing - in the USA this horn costs 1200+ USD and at Thomann just 700 shipped! I will be making all instrument purchases from Thomann in the future.

A really excellent instrument
Padders, 18.04.2017
I've tried a few trumpets recently, including a vintage Yamaha pro model and three Carols. The CT4000H-YSS was good, but felt a bit tight for me. The CT5000L-YLS was quite weighty and took a lot of air before it lit up. Both were great horns, but not for me. Thomann were very accommodating in accepting the returns each time I decided the horn wasn't a keeper.

The CT-5000L-YST is perfect for me in every way. It is free blowing and easy to play all the way from those low Bs up to the top of my range. The sound is lovely and bright but easily toned down with a larger mouthpiece. The build quality is excellent. The valves are smooth and fast, and breaking in nicely (for the first few weeks I've cleaned and re-oiled every day or two, removing the grey build-up you get on new valves). Slotting with the D slide is secure, and as you'd expecta little more vague with the round slide. I honestly can't think of a single criticism. It's great.

This is a great trumpet. If you're in two minds, have a go. I can't think what's not to like, especially at the price. In my opinion it leaves similarly priced Yamaha horns dead in the water.
