BR 800 The enthusiasm predominantly prevails

Josefh, 04.06.2012
plus

- The sound is just really good! I am using an AKG C4000 B large membrane micro, my friend a Rode NT1A; With both mics, both vocal recordings as well as acoustic guitar are very good.
- The drum machine is easy to use and the presets offer everything you need to get started quickly. The sound is also really good!
- The most outstanding thing about this compact device are the effects. There are not 100 different, but all that there is have professional level. It has cost me half a day until I have almost a comparable reverb sound with Cubase 6.0 has brought (felt the BR800 is still better)
- Easy to use, for people who already have some experience with mixing consoles. The guide is very well structured and understandable
- Both recording and mastering (= all channels on 2 stereo channels mix + effects) work without a PC and you always get an amazingly good result.
- It can be operated with conventional batteries and I can relax a shot on the patio masters with the BR800 on your lap
- The built-in microphones are enough to spontaneously record an idea or a session
- 8 V ??tracks per channel ie take 1 - guitar on V-Track 1 record, if I want to repeat it, I switch to channel 1 - V-Track 2 and again play a guitar track on channel 1.
- edit a single track, cut out parts, and go elsewhere on a track; This was probably not the case before, as can be inferred from a few reports.
- If you have used it a couple of times, the recordings go off easily and you can concentrate on the music and not on the technique

minus

- The transfer speed of the individual tracks as wave files via the USB interface on the device itself and the freely available software "BR Series WaveConverter 3.1" is cruelly slow. Also an update of the current firmware from the BR800 and installing the current USB driver (br800_764d_v100-Win7USBx64Driver) does not change anything.

Workarond:
BR800, SD card, SD card into a commercially available reader (eg hama USB 2.0 Card Reader) and download the tracks with the Boss software "BR Series WaveConverter 3.1". This way, the download of the tracks as WAV files is easy and fast.

- Some touch buttons, especially the menu button, do not work.

Workaround:
Simply turn off the BR800, turn it on again (almost a reboot) and everything goes again. Recordings are not lost thereby (Was at least with me so far not the case). The sensitivity of the buttons can be adjusted by the SD card rausmimmt and then the BR800 turns on. Then you get into the appropriate menu (Is described in the manual) - values ??1-10, default 5, I have set 7, so something more sensitive than default.

- It is not an 8 track recorder as it is advertised but a 6 track recorder because the channels are 5/6 and 7/8 stereo channels. Even if you only record a mono signal, such as a voice, you can not separate the stereo tracks. I am the 6 channels, however, completely and when I need more, then I use Bouncing. This means I take on different voices on channel 1-3, equal the volume with the faders (Add accordingly effects, PAN, Reverb ...) take the total signal on channel 7/8 and can then use again channel 1-3 , Note: In order to record the 3 tracks 1-3, you have to switch to the mastering mode and it is always recorded on the virtual channel 8 of the channel strip 7/8. Then I can copy this entire recording to any virtual channel. I copy you then simply from 7/8 V-Track 8 to 7/8 VTrack 1 the next time on V-Track 2 etc. The original tracks of the voices 1-3 do not lose thereby, because I per channel 8 virtual channels to the Available. So I can, for example, record the first voice 8 times on the same channel, but each time on a different virtual channel and then me the recording of the voice raussuchen, which I like the best.

My overall score: The BR 800 is a small compact studio that stands out from the crowd thanks to its outstanding sound qualities. It's just fun to work with the part! From me absolute purchase recommendation!

Compact recorder with diffuse concept

Norbert856, 05.04.2012
The Boss BR-800 is for me a mobile alternative. Since I have a very reasonable home studio, but do not want to break the components on the way, so a small device is offered.

The sound is very good, workmanship despite other reviews also very good. Now comes also with current service pack delivered. Interesting is the possibility to use the small part also as a mixing console.

Here, however, Roland has unfortunately not ended, because just voice or guitar effects can not be used if the mode for 4 simultaneous inputs to choose. You can still adjust the reverb and chorus per channel and also a few typical meaningful insertion effects (compressor, limiter combi), but the really nice effects do not. That would have justified the price to one hundred percent. Another strange flaw is that only a microphone with phantompower is present.

So just when you want to recruit mobile, it can be that you want to do that in stereo. I'm wondering if Roland could not even include musicians in the development. What you can do otherwise, can be read in the manual. Comes on the Roland side in German as a PFD file, in the delivery package apparently only in the English version.

Perhaps Roland should look with such a product also times out of the box, then one could sowas as synonymous generate salesbuckets.
