Milestone reached

ReinhardF, 22.03.2018
The BluBox is - after the torpedo CAB of Two Notes - my second attempt, digitally with Impulse Responses (IR) in the home recording to come further than with my analog speaker simulator. The Torpedo CAB has not worked for me, because despite many settings the sound in terms of punch and articulation but not rankam on the analog simulator. In addition, I did not like the operating concept of the Torpedo CAB - too many menus and extra software, which ultimately leads to the fact that it is more concerned with hardware and software and less with music.
Therefore, I was curious about the deliberately reduced concept of Thomas Blug and the first impression was also positive: The 16 speaker options plus micro position control (actually a well-tuned presence height control) led to good results on a short way and I had in a few minutes found my 3 favorites and had fun. After a few recording tests, it was clear that the BluBox not only offers more options than my analogue speaker simulator (which is to be expected with IR), but also plays the sound quality (punch / articulation) in about the same league (which when Tornado CAB was not the case). Incidentally, my interface is a SPL Crimson 3 and the rest of the recording setup is incl. Cable at the same or higher quality level - in other words, details are clearly audible. Therefore, I was not quite satisfied when I first operated the BluBox with a standard switching power supply. Since I had already made the Crimson the experience that the supplied switching power supply affects the sound quality (slightly washed-out detail, glassy digital character) and brings a good classic power supply with toroidal transformer more, I have in the meantime procured a Cioks power supply at Thomann, to me too the BluBox can hang. With that, the sound quality of the BluBox has again won and in the mix the sound is detailed, has punch and sounds (very important) authentic and organic. Whether that cuts through in life use, I can not say yet - when recording with a good interface, the advantage is clear.

What does not like so much is the limitation to 3 input levels, which makes the adjustment difficult if necessary, if the sound source does not deliver the perfect matching level. It would also be helpful if you could adjust the output level.
Apart from that, I have achieved very good results with both the line-out and the balanced mic-out via the matching inputs of the SPL Crimson.
For use as a DI box in life mode and for use with Speaker Load I can not say anything, because I go with the guitar with / without overdrive pedal in an amp and its effect out in the BluBox. Even without power amp and output transformer and reactive load that sounds very good in my setup. But that certainly depends on the type of amp and in many cases the way via the BluBox with Loadbox is probably better.

CONCLUSION: The BluBox offers only 16 IR basic options, you can not load more IR but the 16 actually cover everything that has occurred in the last 60 years of distinctive speaker / boxing sound. The operation is super-easy and it comes very quickly to very good results. The sound quality of the recording is convincing even for demanding ears, especially if you pay attention to good power supply and good cables (my review of summer Carbocab).
My favorites so far are the IR for the 2x12 Alnico Blue (for both clean and solid overdrive), the 2x12 Blackface and (for the Marshall side) the 1967 Stack.
The rest is a personal matter of taste and maybe more appropriate depending on the song, style and amp.

Good cam.

Jean LouisL, 23.02.2017
Tested with Yamaha THR100H amps, Bluguitar amp1, Crystal FredAmp preamp, The Clean 2notes.Respect their musical characters.
My musical style includes bossa, reggae, blues, world music, classical rock, so my opinion focuses on clear sounds and not too saturated. In these cases I am very satisfied with the sound of the BluBox I use only In recording and to have sounds a little different from my Torpedo cab that I know well. The models of the BBox are of equivalent quality and although limited to 16, they offer amps ample ample enough for the majority of guitarists. The settings are limited too, choice of amp, microphone position (effective), sensitivity of the input high or low, lift.Un very good point for me, it has a line input AND an input To connect to an HP output of any amp up to 100 W (attention lamps require an intermediate load box) .2 outputs: 1 line on 6.35 jack and 1 on XLR
+ Compactness, simplicity, solid case, SON, connection possibilities.
- Less sophisticated than the Torpedo Cab but it is not the same price.
Plugged into a sono, it will relieve many backs ....
