Worlds best computer headset? But what a pain to terminate it yourself...
Görling, 20.01.2019
Having used the DT770 as computer/audio headphone for years I saw Beyerdynamic offered one with a mic. Mic use-case is mostly Skype but I also want the option using them at my friends studio.

At first glance the DT797 seems the more obvious choice since it comes terminated with XLR/stereo-plug. However, the DT797 uses the 250ohm drivers which means a headphone amp is required and the mic needs phantom power. Obviously you can get that stuff hooked to a computer, but that means you can't really use it with a laptop when on the go.

So the 80ohm and dynamic mic is simply the most convenient for computers/portability. Question is how to terminate it properly. As mentioned earlier the pre-terminated 4-pin XLR is only mono-sound. I ended up terminating with 6-pin XLR -> Breakout cable 2xXLR -> XLR->Phono adapter. Maybe just going XLR+stereo-plug for the headphone would have made more sense but this allows for the use of long XLR cables as extension and those are everywhere in studio environments.

Beyerdynamic should be wise and make a version of this with just 2x stereo plug termination. It would be new standard for computer enthusiasts/audiophiles worldwide. Also needs velour-pads (sold separately).

Good for drumming teachers or generally loud environment! Cable is too short, however!
Steffen aus R., 21.09.2012
I use the headset for drumming lessons when you want to listen to music together with the student (Playalong), it rel. Is loud, and one as a teacher still defying what wants to say. The DT-790 is just right. I've been looking for a long-lasting headset, which has musical qualities.

There are some headsets from the area of ??aviation which are super dampened, but only on language are otpimiert and music lousy reproduce. Who knows the DT770 pro, knows what he gets here. In my opinion no hifi or mastering suitable listener, but a decent studio, drummer or FOH listener of the properly "wums" tolerates, and in which NOT the neutral reproduction, etc. is the decision criterion.

The sound image is eh taste -> Even try. The workmanship is OK, even if the plasticfeeling of the auricles and the color is a bit habituation. The multi-pole special cable would be defintiv longer (therefore with features only 3 stars). 3m would have to be for the price.

1. the radius of action is very small because of the short cable,

2. To avoid this, you have to buy extensions for the hearing and the mic channel or solder what costs additional money.

3. the stupid and disturbing is, however, that the plug of the headset (AND of course the extension !!!) often hang in the air, which exerts considerable tension on the cable / the head. And that's just because the cable was saved :-( It is just a small product for all sorts of markets and connecting fields, which also explains why the part is mostly, as also here, sold only with open ends You need and the necessary plugs with order and solder yourself. And here we come to a, for me very very strange point: There are synonymous prefabricated cables ... BUT: Why does not Beyer offer a stereo !!! There is only one 4-pin XLR with the L + and R + connected (see wiring diagram in the pdf-manual) Why do I ask that ???? This is completely unacceptable for me because yes in Playalong is often on a channel the Click And on the other the music or the drumming track, which you then have to be able to hide individually via Panorama. Either way, I want to have music in stereo.

Well ... ok ... Thomann offers only the uncommitted model. So the appropriate plugs to order and even solder. The few EUR and the "work" comes then just stop. If you want to have extensions because of the short cable, there are still cables and additional connectors. So the whole thing then rel. expensive. Possibly this also frightens the solder-inexperienced potential buyer. I also had the model with condensation (DT-797). I would recommend for very noisy environment, it is defintively too sensitive (apart from it, of course, it needs phantom power).

The voice quality is better with capacitor. This could be more important for speech labs than the better interference damping of dynamic mics.
