Great product but unit has failed
Andrew350, 09.05.2013
the first channel has stopped working. returns/repairs department i go.

other than the 1st channel going down it is a very good product. the only thing is it is a very deep heavy unit so make sure you get a big flightcase for it!

Class AD / DA converters with rerating
01.03.2017
I use the ART TubeOpto 8 as an addition to my RME Hammerfall by 8 channels via ADAT.

The preamplifier / converter in the 19-inch format is relatively low and above all difficult - rather for the studio than for mobile applications. There is nothing wrong with the processing - the jacks, buttons and potentiometers are high-quality and feel first-class.

When connecting, the first thing you notice is that the TubeOpto not only converts DA, ie the preamplified 8 channels on ADAT, but also AD - one can send the TubeOpto from the sound card 8 channels via ADAT, which then lie on the backside jack jacks.

Optionally, the pre-amplified signals can be output directly (paired in pairs) on the Klockoutputs, for example, to use a different converter than the one used in the device.

Application example: the TubeOpto syncs via ADAT or Wordclock to 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz - there is no option for multiplexing, ie if you want to record with higher sampler data, you need a converter that is SMUX.

The TubeOpto amplified in with a transistor circuit, the tube is connected downstream and can be tapped for each channel with a potentiometer for coloring. The saturation of the built-in tubes works best for me on broad-spectrum sounds with a middle pitch - analog electronic claps, snares and hats and cymbals sound really bold.

For bassy signals like kicks and synth basses, the V3 sound shaping used in the ART Tube MPs works better - with tubeopto one should be with these signals with the crossing of the tubes rather restrained.

The level before the conversion is set via a second potentiometer. In practice this can be done by hand: regulate the tube - adjust the level - ready.

Since the level before conversion can already be optimally adapted, it does not matter in practice that the converters are a little less noise-reducing than with RME. There are still 80 dB of dynamics, the noise levels of the connected (modern) synths - Dave Smith, Mutable Instruments, Jomox, Arturia - are much higher.

Phantom power is switched to the left of the TubeOpto for four channels at the same time, there is the pad and the phase for each channel - there is nothing to complain about, the phantom power can be switched individually would have been more beautiful.

Conclusion: with the TubeOpto 8 I am completely satisfied, the option with the tubes sound already in the recording already use, but not for all sounds - for even more flexibility, I recommend the ART Tube MP, sonically precise and neutral Recordings with good microphones I like to do with the RME Quadmic.

The TubeOpto 8 makes exactly what it promises and should, is equipped with features sinvoll and without faxing super processed. I would buy again.
