Preamp for electric bass

FelixD, 09.10.2013
I use the preamp exclusively to amplify my bass (Cort Artisan C4H, Yamaha BB605) and can therefore only give my opinion on this use. As a preamp for microphones I have not tested it yet.

The Pro Channel II gives me everything I need to control the sound of my bass and what I do not offer in this way almost all bassamps.

The leveling is very easy to do with the LED indicators, an override at any stage is also displayed. A short flashing of peaks, such as in the case of Slaps, however, does not sound noticeable.

The lowcut (1st order) is more than sound shaping, because it can be seen as loudspeaker protection. The sound control is an interesting aspect, however, because it sits in front of the compressor.

It has all the necessary control options. I only use it to slightly attenuate peaks (3.5: 1) because I do not like an overly compressed bass sound. However, it is flexible enough to realize all sound wishes. Especially the adjustable attack and release times are, in my view, very important, in order to adjust the compressor to its playing style and the used basses.

The LED display does not leave you in the dark about the gain reduction, so you also have an optical check of the compressor function in addition to the acoustic.

The EQ is from my point of view one of the strengths of the preamp. He just makes what's on it and that's exactly what you want. Even changes of 3 dB are clearly audible. Who knows where he wants to change in the frequency spectrum what has so much fun. A full parameter would certainly be even more beautiful, especially for the bass would be a switch to bell filters and the free choice of the approach frequency good.

However, since the depth control can be adjusted up to 20 Hz, this is to be avoided, if this is not to be used in a different frequency range. The change of the quality in 2 steps I feel as practical and sufficient for me.

Sound descriptions are always a bit difficult. I feel the sound of the Pro Channel II as a basic neutral with a slight coloration, when the preamp is a bit hotter. Then the circuit adds overtones, which push the bass slightly more into the crackling. However, correct distortion is not to be expected. The different sounds of my basses are very well differentiated, with different playing techniques, different sounds can be produced.

I have also used the preamp for the bass player of the band (HeavyMetal / Hardrock), which I have been working as a sound technician, and has thus also produced a very satisfactory sound. I went straight from the preamp to the desk, Monitoring ran over Wedges and InEar and the bassist was absolutely happy.

I myself play the preamp at the time over a Samson power amp in an Ashdown MAG410, however in the self-built housing.

As a point of criticism, I have to mention slight weaknesses in the processing. Some controllers do not fit centrally in the holes on the front panel and are easy to grind. But as I rarely admit this, it rarely occurs. The XLR jacks on the back handle extremely tight, so locking is almost superfluous and you have to use more force than you really want to remove the cable.

The size and the weight can of course not keep up with the small ClassD top parts, especially if you add the power amp. The output level is displayed by means of pointers, unfortunately this (principle-based) is very sluggish. I would have also wanted an LED display here, so that the peaks are also displayed.

However, I see the advantages of the preamp in this application as clearly superior: sound, flexibility and a usual operation for a sound engineer. The Grundound is excellent and I have all possibilities to make specific corrections. If you are looking for a preamp for electric bass, you should look at the Pro Channel II times.

I am sure that it is also useful in its actual use as a microphone preamp.

Good allround preamp.

Matthias573, 06.11.2013
I use the ART PC2 as bass preamp in combination it Peavey IPR1600 power amplifier and fEARful cabinets.

The kind pro is I believe the best channel strip one can get for under 500 euro - and also over it is the selection a little thin sometimes.
The idea was to have the studio sound, which the technician is getting from the DI anyway and by means of channel strip a little in the form, also on the stage to have.

The pre-amp is not sterile, but very clean and noiseless, also very transparent and forbids the bass to hide something in the spectrum. The factory is really big crap, I advise to equal what else to order (I have a TAD 030 12AX7 reinbau - gives a bit more character).
The compressor is already a very fine thing, and the EQ is so much the best I have heard so far in the price class. Very grippy and precise, with various possibilities at each frequency.
Between each section, other devices can be connected in series - I have a FDECK HPF between the pre-amp and the compressor to protect my compressor and my speakers.

Great are the 2 outputs - XLR is immediately clear for the mixer (no more DI needed) and parallel goes to the power stage. The ART PC2 has enough juice to make power amplifiers reasonably steam under the butt.
All components (van the tubes apart) are quite high-quality, buttons are not too light and not too heavy. The LED bars and the VU meter help to keep the entire GAIN chain 100% under control.
In this price class really an absolute No-Brainer!

There is a point deduction for operation because the surface is really quite full with small and large buttons and the manual could be a little more clear.
It takes a little time until you have the feeling to know what all the heads are doing
