GEM OF A MONOSYNTH

Thomas W. 9413, 04.06.2015
This synth sounds absolutely gorgeous. With the most fantastic multimode filter, great midi to cv converter and super flexible patch panel. Proper one knob per function design, every control is right there for immediate control. It can generate very high frequencys to massive low bass especially with the sub osc which allows saw or square wave (or both) one or two octaves below original frequencys... Snappy to lazy envelopes, lovely LFO with sample and hold, plus ring mod, pulse width modulation, noise generator; lots of features.... grab loads of patch leads and enjoy. This instrument rocks.

Good concept, bad sound

johnny_flash, 18.05.2015
I've had a lot of analog synthesizers in my life, and this one is definitely the worst for me. I bought the Telemark, because I had convinced different Youtube videos of the sound. Unfortunately, I had only one month after the purchase opportunity to test the synth in detail. Otherwise I would have sent him back. So I had to resell it at a loss.

What is so bad at Telemark? There are many minor and major defects, which in sum result in a desolate picture:

- The basic sound of the VCOs is thin and for me inferior. The sound is only pleasant when two VCOs are slightly disarmed and the resonance is turned on a bit.
- The VCOs, although having a rectangular waveform, are not able to produce a proper square wave! The adjustment of the pulse width results only in different pulse waves.
- The VCOs can only be tuned one octave. This is a bit thin.
- The LFO can not be fine tuned. A subtle vibrato is thus not possible.
- The envelope curves are very imprecise, ie washed. Crisp sounds can be forgotten with this part. In addition, the envelope curves are very different when repeatedly pressing the same button, sometimes percussive, sometimes less.
- The input for CV2 (Velocity) is so badly calibrated that an impact strength of approx. 60 already generates a maximum cutoff frequency (even if Cutoff is set to 0).
- It is almost impossible to produce a sound whose sound changes from very light to very dull.
- The White Noise is the purest catastrophe. So what dirty I have never heard in an analog synthesizer. It really does not work.
- The VCOs are arranged on a Midi keyboard so that you can not use the lowest octave of the keyboard. The pitch ranges between 15 and 30 Hz. You can not set the pitch of the lowest key.
- The instruction manual is extremely lean and in parts even wrong.
- In addition, the VCOs were not adjusted from the factory. The setting itself is, but is not as simple as one thinks.
- With my Midi-Setup, the Telemark has even been constantly producing Midi-Hänger. I had no other synth.
- The processing of the potis is bad. They wiggle and are not always centered.
- Customer service is bad. I have not received any clear answers to any of my questions.

For me, it remains a mystery, why the Telemark in different test reports does not get worse. Many synthesizers are a matter of taste. This is not.
