Sennheiser HMDC 27

I dabbled for way too long when deciding with a proper headset with an included microphone to use in both audio monitoring for corporate filmmaking in the field. While the headphones are very expensive, I feel that it's money well spent. The audio feels very neutral, and does not blow your mind away – but that's what I want when monitoring sound.

When monitoring in the field, I plug the headphones into a Canon C200 with the microphone, so my speech, comments and interview questions are recorded to the second track. I've found that the noice cancelling feature with phantom power through the microphone input's XLR has come extremely useful to be more certain what I'm hearing.

I'm very pleased with the ergonomics, and especially the possibility to swivel the right-side headphone away from the ear.

For my computer monitoring I push the sound through Focusrite 2i2 3rd gen, but unfortunately the dynamic microphone's input was very quiet. With combination of HMDC 27 and 2i2's low input, this was an issue; however, I purchased DM1 Dynamite to boost the levels, and it did the trick.

If you don't need noice-cancelling and want a stronger microphone input and don't work in a noisy environment, HME 27 could be a better choice. Nonetheless, I'm very pleased with the HMDC 27.

First of all I woud wish, when I purchase over 500€ headset, it would come with storage case. But not. Sound quality is great and clear, however low end sound isn't so good. Well, It is designed to listen communications. I wouldn't purchase this for listening music, but works for that ok. Active noise canceling isn't great either, comparing to cheaper high end consumer headphones, but cancels a bit more noise still. Mic has lot of hizz noise at least on my Roland Rubix24 sound card. Still good headset, but I was expecting a bit better, when thinking price.

The HMDC 27 is an excellent product; although quite expensive, the amazing cardioid mic quality in any type of environment allows you to use it everywhere. Living in a quite noisy apartment due to poorly soundproofed windows, the closed over-ear headphones greatly reduced this inconvenience, and people listening to me could barely hear cars any more (just slight background noise, barely noticeable).

However, I had to remove one star for the headphones sound. You should not expect audiophile levels of listening with this product. Although all levels are very clear (especially the bass), I had to play with my mixer a little bit to have both ears at the same level -left ear was a bit too low. This issue is probably due to the mic and cable being on the left side as well, causing it to be a bit unbalanced.

HMD 27 VS HMDC 27:

HMDC version comes with XLR & jack cable, HMD does NOT. HMDC also has an additional noise cancel switch that can be useful. If you do not already own cables, get the HMDC version.

Overall, excellent product for the price tag, would definitely recommend for broadcasters, radio hosts or streamers.
