High gain channel in a box for a low gain amp

I mostly play metal and was looking hard for a good distortion pedal to use in front of my tube amp. I narrowed my options down to this one, an Angry Charlie and The Pinnacle, and basically chose this one because of its built-in noise gate. To my ear all 3 pedals sound 100%, so I couldn't make the decision based on sound quality alone. I'm happy with my choice!

I'm using the pedal in front of my HB Tube15 with the amp gain set to 0. The sound of the pedal is massive, rich and organic. Really satisfying warm, and cutting distortion sound, hard to believe that it all comes from a stompbox - it sounds like a real tube amp distortion channel. The built-in gate works great. The boost function of the pedal does make a difference to the sound and sustain, but I still prefer a separate boost pedal in front of the MXR 5150.

...Which leads us to the only con this pedal has: you have to use a boost in front of it to tighten up the sound for chugging. I use a Maxon OD808. Again, the MXR handles the boost pedal like a real amp would. Highly recommended!

Ostin tämän pedaalin itselleni noin puoli vuotta sitten. Hämmästyin siitä, että tämä pedaali todellakin tekee sen minkä lupaa eli antaa erittäin ison ja täyteläisen särösoundin. Itse asiassa tämä on ensimmäinen overdrive/distortionpedaali, joka ei petä odotuksia. Pedaali on erittäin helppo käyttää ja noisegate on myös todella toimiva tehden pedaalista taustaääniltään erittäin hiljaisen eikä ikävää kiertoa siten ilmene.

Ostin hieman tämän jälkeen myös uuden EVH 5150 III LBX 15W-nupin ja hyvin lähellä tämän pedaalin soundi on tuota nuppia. Ei ihan sama, mutta riittävän samanlainen taatakseen takuuvarmasti EVH-soundin. Suosittelen siis jos tykkäät pedaaleista ja haluat hakea niillä vaihtelua soundiisi vahvistinta vaihtamatta.

Iconic overdrive, but needs a boost in front of it to get the most out of it

I get all my guitar tone from my board so I can use a clean amp, and this pedal serves well as a pre-amp stage before a power-amp/speaker simulator.

I particularly like the form factor with the sockets at the top and the battery slot underneath. The built-in "smart gate" that only cuts the hiss is a very smart move. Some of the knobs also have a sticking point to show you their "nominal" level (because it's not always at 12 o'clock). Good for fumbling in the dark.

I think the passive EQ is a bit lame though, and the boost button is so subtle I don't know why it's there. I have to use a Unit67 boost pedal in front to get the response I want.

That said, when set up the way I want it the tone is killer.

Sound like Eddy for a mild budget

If you are on a budget and want to sound like Eddy, well you can't go wrong with this item. It is very well build and has great features such as the noise gate and boost. Hook up an EVH striped series guitar and you've got yourself a great match.
