Harley Benton PB-50 SB Vintage Series

Alkuvaikutelma bassosta oli erittäin positiivinen. Työn jälki pintapuolisesti varsin siistiä, soittotuntuma oikein hyvä, kaula on miellyttävä mattapintainen, virittimet ok, mikki asiallinen. Etenkin hinnan (99 eur) huomioiden hyvinkin vakuuttava soitin.

Tämän hintaluokan bassoissa yksilöeroja lienee melko reilusti. Itselleni valitettavasti lienee sattunut maanantaikappale kohdalle, nimittäin soittimessa ilmeni ihmeellistä resonointia kielten värähtelyn lisäksi. Varsinkin vapaata E-kieltä soitettaessa basso helisi jo melko häiritsevästi. Helinän aiheuttajaksi paikantui basson kaularauta, joka "soi" kielten värähtelyn vaikutuksesta. Oma kappaleeni lähti palautukseen ja vaihtuu toisenmerkkiseen bassoon. Onneksi Thomannilla tämä onnistuu ilman ongelmia.

Joka tapauksessa täytyy todeta, että mikäli k.o. oiretta ei olisi bassossa ollut, voisin antaa tälle (hintalappu huomioiden) täydet 5 tähteä.

This is one of the nicest basses in this price range. You should not expect too much though. As can be expected, all the parts are of the cheapest quality. Everything works though.

The neck is a nice chunky piece of maple. I would describe it as a U-profile-neck. The fretboard is laminated maple, as on a 1972 Fender Telecaster bass. No skunk stripe. There is hardly any finish. The fretting work seems to be done fairly well. The frets fit firmly and there are no gaps. The fret ends have been filled with putty. The radius is more or less 14". The grain looks good and the neck is not too heavy. Mine had a tiny gap at the heel though, where the fretboard is glued to the neck. The fault is mostly cosmetic though, and can be fixed by a DIY person.

The body has a perfect glossy finish. Only if you unscrew the pickguard you'll find some finishing faults around the screw holes. Nothing serious though. The control plate is placed a little nearer the strings than on a Fender, so don't expect to swap the pickguard with an of-the-shelf model.

The pickguard itself is more or less unfinished. Strait angle edges and the curve at the upper bout is not a perfect curve.

The bridge is the ugliest thing on this instrument. It can easily be replaced though. Mine looked like it was slightly misaligned.

The pickup is a Wilkinson and it actually sounds ok, especially if you use a string mute.

The tuners are ok. Not great, but not bad either.

My only disappointment is the colour. It is not a 2-tone sunburst as advertised, but a 3-tone. Also it seems like the wood grain lacks the 'deep shine' of natural wood. It is possile that the top has been laminated with a 'photo'.

I bought mine just to get a maple neck for another bass project. For half the price of a spare neck I got a complete bass. I put an old cheap rosewood neck on this and now use it as a fretless.

If you are willing to accept the fact that this is a low quality instrument, and that there is no miracle that can change that, then you should buy this one.

P-bassoa ja hyvänlaatuista sellaista on vaikea löytää alle huntilla. Thomann tarjoaa oman merkin jolla on hinta-laatusuhde kohdillaan! Tämä basso on eka bassoni jonka ikinä olen hankkinut, kyseinen malli näytti nätiltä ja värimaailma oli mun makuun. Bassossa on virittimet jotka ovat mukavan tiukilla eivätkä löysty. Nauhojen hienosäädöllä saa komean ja laadukkaan basson! Pikku miinus siitä että kun vastaanotin basson niin muoveja on vaikea saada pois potikoiden ja sormituen alta!
