After having the Octatrack for 1/2 year.

It is a part of our band. More for performing music than to compose. We compose songs in a DAW at first and then I am trying to recreate these song inside of the Octatrack.
It's basically our
1. Master brain (tempo sync for another sequencer based instruments, storing core structure of the song, sending MIDI notes)
2. Beat machine
3. Sample player. I am using sliced samples to play live with guitarist and bass guitar guy. This way I can play any instrument I want (sounds created in a DAW), cause you can sample notes played in the song with the sound you love and then play it on the keyboard of the OT live. It so much fun. And of course, you sample just notes you are using in your song, so it decreases the chance you will make mistakes :)

I heard many times that this machine is too hard to understand. Yes, I agree that there is a steep learning curve. But if you want to make the whole songs and make electronic music (or have a taste of electronic music in your songs - you can btw make a music of any genre with the OT, that must be said) and have powerful sequencer and to sequence another gear by MIDI and so on, so on, then I think you will simply dive into that and learn it. I think it depends on how willing a user is to learn new things.
The biggest thing with the OT is, in my opinion, that the Octatrack is definitely not for everybody. It works the way user does not expect. It is very shocking device I would say. And that can be for somebody appealing, cool and refreshing, but for somebody else a pure nightmare. Honestly, I experienced both. At first excited, then scared, frustrated and confused and nowadays, as I am learning it more and more, it becomes my lovely friend and it is really, really cool to use. Rewarding. Yes, now I enjoy to use it.
But you may ask: "how to survive the time before it's rewarding?"
As I said up there, the machine has quite an unexpected approach to making music. I had some really hard time trying to find out what am I going to do with this box. How should I approach it. Then I heard one guy saying this: "you should not connect it to anything else at first, just to take it to a date with you time to time. Just you and your instrument." And it is so true! It worked for me. I just needed to invest some time in exploring the Octatrack and these days I am realizing that I know more and more about how to use it, how to take advantage of the power it offers and so. And it is so powerful and fun to use I must say!
Another scary thing for a user can be that this machine offers SO MANY OPTIONS. So many options how to connect things, how to set things, how to play it and so on. I needed to make some rules, introduce some limitations that could help me to reduce possibilities and so to make my workflow faster and easier to grasp. Yes, it is still evolving, I am improving things that are faulty as I am learning new things about the machine. But I enjoy the process. It is a big pleasure. Making and performing music becomes a pleasure for me.

3.1 CONS
For me, the biggest cons are:
- Fill function can be performed only by combination of FUNC + PAGE and you cannot achieve it with just one hand. That is not very cool. Because I need another hand for something else for the most of the time. I would like to achieve fill at least with some MIDI pedal or something, but as far as I know there is not such CC message.
- Tempo per pattern/part/bank (even one of these would be wonderful) is missing. You need to change tempo manually or in arranger mode (arr mode is awesome btw).

3.2 PROS
OT has many and many pros, but I want to point out something that is not written in the manual (or somewhere on the box):
- OT GIVES YOU A CHOICE. You can choose the level of how much you are willing to play/do things manually and how much you need/want the OT to take care of things instead of you. It means you can program the whole song there and it will play completely without your touch (this can be a scenario when the whole band is busy playing live instruments and so the OT is there for playing backing tracks, keeping the tempo of your performance or so, simply playing on its own. Totally possible. Another side of the spectrum is case when you want to control the OT as much as your brain (and hands) allows you to. The advantage is that as soon you feel that some aspect of the song is a way over your brain, let the Octatrack do it for you (= prepare it in OT). And of course you can do everything in between these two extremes, you can set the ratio of "OT plays for you" : "you play manually" however you want. And that is great.

And at the end I must say something about the design. I fall in love with how nice this box is. I really like the color, the clicky buttons, the screen. Encoders, slider. And the build quality is just gorgeous! I love it.

Great Machine
6zmobot, 24.04.2020
I use Octatrack for live performance and I'm enjoying it very much. It's an elaborately designed instrument and a great medium for performing music live.
It took me quite a while to learn and get familiar with its features. After using it more than two years now, I'm still learning new features and I feel I'm not yet using it to it's full potential. That is very exciting though! My favorite features are internal/external real-time sampling and user-defined LFOs.
What I'm extremely missing is a free and official library editor software. It takes a lot of time to prepare samples for a project and there is no convenient way to migrate banks/tracks between projects. It can be frustrating. Another feature that I'd like have is to be able to transfer MIDI clips from my computer to Octatrack. Unfortunately Octatrack allows only recording MIDI or inserting single MIDI note trigs. The USB port is functioning solely as a card reader.
Nevertheless Octatrack is still my favorite instrument in my studio right now. It requires commitment until one can feel comfortable to play with it, and it sounds just great on the way!
