Sorprendente guitarra
Machi 04.03.2022

Great little SG copy for a fraction of an Epi!

This guitar is simply great and would still be great if it were to cost twice as much.

First the weak points:
1. It's absurd that manufacturers are still putting strap buttons in places that cause neck dive. I moved the strap button from the rear of the top horn to the tip, just like the Tony Iommi signature SG and it solved the problem. While researching whether this was a feasible solution, I came across many warnings that doing this could cause the wood to separate on the horn. While I have seen many warnings, I haven't seen a single report of the wood actually splitting, and besides, if Gibson is putting the button there for the Iommi signature SG, why couldn't I do it on my HB? The guitar is really light and while the horn is very pointy, it's also thick and wood is very strong. The only thing I wish HB would change is the placement of the strap button.

2. The coil split on the Tesla pickups doesn't change the sound as much as it could. It thins the sound and decreases the volume a bit, but it doesn't produce a real single coil tone. Whatever. In humbucker mode, it really sounds like an SG. The neck is super deep and powerful and the bridge has that SG scream.

3. The guitar was gritty and a little dirty when it arrived. Wiping it with a damp cloth was an easy fix.

4. The gold pickguard is a nice idea, but the color just doesn't work.

Basically everything else is fantastic and far exceeds my expectations. Here are a few points to note.

1. The matte finish is super cool. No fingerprints, no sticking to skin. I kind of hope it wears in and the guitar ends up with a road worn look.

2. The hardware is excellent. Tuners, bridge, etc, all fantastic.

3. After a quick setup and string change to 10-52s, the pickups really sound like a vintage SG.

4. I really like the neck profile. I'm not a fan of holding a baseball bat in my left hand, and this neck is slim, fast, and just chunky enough to feel substantial but not cumbersome.

5. I was not expecting the fretboard to be sealed, but it is. I ended up scraping a bit of sealer (poly?) off the frets with the strings, but it was only on a few frets here and there.

6. I saw one review on YouTube where the guy took the pickguard off to find the body had a routed chamber under the guard. I was pleased to see that mine doesn't have that. I like the option to have the black pickguard on, or to remove it and just have the gold screws in the holes in the body.

7. The frets are in really good shape, and better than many Mexican Fenders and Epiphones I've had. You could spend time filing, rounding, and polishing, but it's definitely not necessary.

8. The color on mine is slightly different than in the picture. Mine is more of a robin's egg blue, but that's perfectly fine with me. It looks great with the dark fretboard and gold hardware.

Edit: The color has faded to daphne blue as in the picture after a week or two. This became obvious when I took the pickguard off and it was still that initial robin's egg color.

Hyvä kitara hintaisekseen.
Virittimet ovat todella hyvät tämän hintaluokan kitaraan.
Myös mikit ok.
Mukava pintakäsittely.
