Overall I'm very pleased with the mandolin. It was delivered very quickly and arrived in good condition. It did however require some setting up. The bridge wasn't centered across the instrument and the action was set quite high and very unevenly across the strings. Some of the tuners were also very tight and seemed to 'load up' when tightened. The finish overall is excellent but the area underneath the fretboard extension is very poor. All these were sorted out very quickly and I'm now delighted with the tone and intonation of the instrument - something that is not always the case with a mandolin!
Disappointed with Quality Control on this mandolin
The mandolin arrived with bridge collapsed, which I don't mind as it avoids any damage in transit. The mandolin looks nice, no problems with the finish, looks pretty enough.
Once setup I quickly noticed some issues: (1) A couple of the tuners were very stiff to turn in places. (2) A few of the frets were low on the side of the high E string. (3) The nut slots are set very high
I was going to return it but after some weeks of toing and froing with Thomann support, I decided to keep it and get the nut filed and frets levelled (easy with some high frets but not so easy with low).
I would caution any one who is considering buying one of these Chinese mandolins to think about the extra cost and time involved to get it into playable condition. It doesn't seem to me that Thomann themselves do any QC other than for finish issues, or else they would have picked the low fret issue up and rejected the instrument prior to sending out to a customer.
