I am mainly a guitar player but decided to add a Mandolin sound to my arsenal for extra texture in recordings, and a different platform upon which to compose new songs. I decided to go with the Loar LM-220-VS because I am already an owner of a Loar LM-200 guitar that is itself quite outstanding. I have to say the Mandolin came up to my high expectations for this brand. The finish was near immaculate throughout, the frets and nut etc all perfectly set and playable. For me, it chops and sings just like I want a mandolin to sound. I am not a mandolin expert, but for someone coming to the Mandolin from guitar etc I would have no hesitation in recommending this instrument.
Maybe it was just this one, but it looked like crap.
I hope it was only the one I received, but since I opened the box I started to fall in disappointment. It looks like between the fingerboard and the body of the mandolin, some mold found a nice place to settle, or the lacquer covering the wood is breaking apart, or both. Or maybe I'm blind in what I see... Then I tuned it started to play a bit. The sound is really nice, till I'm hearing what I though to be a joke. There was a metallic vibration sound as if the metal parts or something else was not fitted right, or I don't know what, but it was not right at all. The same sound I can still hear on my 20 years old guitar which I'm not playing it anymore.
