Tech 21 SansAmp Character British V2 - overdrive pedal with switchable speaker simulation and 3-band EQ. The legendary crunch of British steel and Greenback style speakers delivers searing blues to UK anarchy from this Anglo voiced pedal, tough Bluesbreaker overdrive, the throaty roar of a Plexi or the ballsy smack-down of a '70s Metalface, it all adds up to a well tasty spot o' bovver, Brit-style. Powered via 9V battery or power supply (not included).
I purchased this pedal for recording without an amplifier because I had grown tired of using overly artificial sounding imitations preloaded on my digital recorder. While it sounds significantly better than the digital modeling I had been using previously, it doesn't quite have that authentic Marshall tube tone. All of its controls have a very wide range and I tried tweaking them all but to no avail. Nothing I did made it sound any closer to a real amp. It can sound rather authentic in a band setting but when you listen to a single track, you can hear that something's not quite up to par. Perhaps I'm being overly critical but that's my opinion. It does an excellent job as an overdrive pedal and is probably better than most alternatives but is not convincing enough, for me at least, to be used for direct recording. On the positive note, the pedal is well built and has a switch that doesn't produce a loud 'click'. I would have liked a more durable finish but other than that, the pedal is good.
