I bought the 12" x 09" Imperialstar Tom to use with my Tama Rockstar DX drum kit. I had three toms before and wanted to expand a bit. I should have known it'd be smarter to save some money for a good quality drum, but I was so eager that I jumped into buying this one.
The Imperialstar set is an entry level set and one of the cheapest Tama kits out there. And you can tell. My Rockstars aren't exactly world class but even next to my old toms I noticed the flaws with this one. (Saying that, I'm still using it after over two years.)
When you've tuned the drum, the sound is alright (at best). However, I find that the tuning loosens up quickly and the head doesn't stay tight. Consequently, the sound of the drum is significantly lower than I'd like it to be. I suppose if I could bother tuning it about every other time I played, it'd be alright, but I can't.
I'd say if you're looking for a good cheap tom, stop looking. Save a bit of money or at least look for something used. I'm still using this tom but I cringe everytime I notice the head's all loose and the sound's turned into that of a cardboard box in two days after tuning.
