I always purchase Rico Royal reeds because it's often confusing to find your way around the different sizes, since they are not standardized amongst the various companies. Rico Royal tend to be slightly thinner (or softer) than other brands, for example a 1.5 reed from Vandoren will be thicker than a 1.5 and even a 2.0 reed from Rico. Therefore I usually prefer going for a 1.0 Rico Royal set, which is particularly soft and well suited for beginners. The quality is also very good, and the range of strength is quite wide, which is convenient for all levels of players.
I purchased these as I had heard a lot about them. As the reed was a strength 1, I found it very easy to get a sound and was able to get hit a lot of registers on the saxophone. The reed did get softer quite quickly as time went on/ So next time will get a 2 or /2 1/2 strength.
I can see why Rico are recommended as good all round reed and would recommend this strength for someone just starting out on the saxophone.
