Rottenburg Alto Recorder

Like the violin, the classical recorder dates back to the Baroque period in cultural centres such as Paris, London, Amsterdam, Nürnberg and Brussels. Friedrich von Huene, the well-known recorder maker, examined almost all original recorders that were sent to museums. Developed from the data collected and in the style of instruments from Jean-Hyacinth-Joseph Rottenburgh, the MOECK Rottenburgh Baroque recorder in modern tuning was born.

Today, they are the most played Baroque solo recorders and have proven themselves to be particularly reliable. They are characterised by their brilliant trebles.

Disappointing
Evan B. 16.06.2022
I should have listened to the other reviews that were critical of this instrument and spent the extra money on a Mollenhaur Denner basset; I have a couple other higher Moeck Rottenburgh recorders that I really like, but this one is a disappointment. The quality of the manufacture seems fine, and it sounds alright, but honestly it doesn’t sound dramatically different than my plastic Aulos Symphony basset. The high F is difficult to get to speak articulated, although I’ve encountered that on other bassets before. The mouthpiece at the end of bocal is black plastic, many other basset/great bass recorders have this made from wood; this is a small detail, and obviously doesn’t make any difference in how the instrument sounds. The finish of the instrument looks good, and it is pretty lightweight because it’s maple, if that’s something you’re looking for.

My biggest problem with this instrument is the hole/key placements. They clearly intend for this recorder to be played direct-blow with the instrument lower down, because the ring fingers are offset pretty far, especially the right ring finger G/G# double holes. If you look closely at the images of this instrument and Mollenhauer bassets you can really see the difference. I only play basset with a bocal, so with the instrument that high the ring finger positions feel very unnatural and offset too far. The F/F# double keys have a roller, which is nice, though. I’m going to return it and get a Mollenhaur Denner basset instead, I'm grateful Thomann accepts returns.

Perfect Service

The service from Thomann was fantastic and fast. Within days of ordering I received my Bass Recorder.

Thomann offered the most competitive price for this model and I am not disappointed. The Moeck Rottenburgh Bass has a lovely sweet and mellow tone but can also handle some loud playing when needed.

I've used this instrument in an ensemble and it blends very well. It looks good, and comes with a lovely velvet lined case.

I wish I had bought one years ago.
