I bought the MFB triple as a starter module for my foray into modular, partly because of the cool livery which reminds me of the pro one, and because its a cheap way to get multiple oscillators and features into your modular. The three ocs's produce Triangle, Saw and Pulse waves and have separate VC control so you could run three different sequences at the same time. Osc3 goes down to 32 feet for low end and osc 1+2 will run up to 4foot. There is a ring mod out (digital) of OSC 1+2 as well as a mix or individual outs with level control and sync. Add PWM and you have a really versatile oscillator with a great fat sound. Oh and there's a noise source too!
I really wanted to increase the number of oscillators in my system and opted for this. It's a really useful addition to my setup in a relatively small amount of space.
As well as the standard synth tones it has a built in ring modulator and noise generator. Unlike the oscillators, these aren't analogue but sound fine - especially when filtered.
It's surprisingly flexible; each oscillator can share one common CV input, or they can be controlled individually. In addition to that there is equal flexibility in the output stage, where an inbuilt mixer allows you to blend the three VCO's and noise through one output, or you can take the output of one or all of the oscillators separately. This doesn't include the Ring Modulator, but one thing I have found to be great fun is routing the Ring Modulator output back into one of the attenuated inputs for some strange almost FM like timbres.
While it's true that the build quality doesn't quite feel as rock solid as a standard Doepfer or Mutable Instruments module I can't see it being a problem; I've been using the MFB dual ADSR and LFO modules for a year now and had no problems.
If you're just starting out in Eurorack and money is an issue I'd recommend this most highly indeed.
