There is a lot to be said for a quality tambourine, as a studio engineer it can really add lovely top-end sparkle to a track. I've owned cheaper plastic tambourines before, and they sound lifeless, dull and cheap. This Meinl is a great upgrade, straight out of the box it has a reassuring weight from the real wood and brass. The quality of the sound is just as good, it has a beautiful glittery sound and a nice long decay.
I was after a better sound than my plastic Rhythm Tech tambourine, so I thought a wooden frame and brass jingles would be a step up. Instead I found this tambourine to be too heavy and the grip too hard to hold. Because of that, it is impossible to even play eighth notes at normal tempo. It is also very loud. Hard on your ears, especially your band mates. I later bought the "Meinl TMT1R" instead. Better weight, much better grip and easier on your ears.
