I was looking for a tenor ukulele to add to my home studio. I had never owned one before, so I went around local stores trying out different models and sizes. I decided I wanted a tenor because of the different range and bigger size of the instrument, but only the more expensive models felt nice to play. I saw the kala on thomann and checked out some video/written reviews online. Everyone said this was a unique and great playing instrument so I took a chance and ordered it. I immediately loved it. The body is really slim, but due to the solid top and curved back it projects wonderfully and sounds really warm. I'm not a Uke expert, but I know what I like. At this price, you will not find a better instrument. Get it!
Utterly fabulous. I needed something to go in a travel bag or suitcase (ski trips and holidays) but due to the fact I have fingers like a bratwurst I can't play a concert or soprano. The quality and feel of the instrument is first class and even in its well padded gig bag it is as slim as my normal tenor Uke. The sound is interesting, it is not quite as loud as my normal instrument, but certainly loud enough, and with just a little more "gusto" than how I usually play you would be hard pushed to tell the difference. One thing though, presumably due to the size of the sound box, it sounds more akin to a concert Uke than a tenor, the sound is very pure and sweet but not like my other Kala full size tenor a bit less mellow and a fair bit brighter. So, perhaps anyone looking for a concert style, but who like me has fingers like a gorilla and needs a tenor scale size, then give this a look. Rating, a true 5 star for both quality, design and sound.
