My Gibraltar 9608D Drum Throne will probably never see a drummer. I purchased this stool to be used in my voice booth, for singers and voice-over actors, so it needed to be very silent when someone is sitting on it. It's absolutely perfect for this job: it gives a great (high) sitting posture with no pressure on the abdomen, so it allows for free breathing. There is no stuff that sticks out, like arm or back rests, which would inevitably cause noises or change the room's acoustics. The height adjustment procedure is very slow (much slower than Tama stools for example), but is also extremely stable once set and locked. Tamas will remain wobbly, even after tightening the knobs strongly, because of the toy-like center column fixing mechanism. But the Gibraltar 9608D's legs and columns are totally rocksteady due to the serious locking mechanisms. It does not make any mechanical noises when you sit and move on it.
The seat is a bit softer than the Tama I also have. This can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on one's preference. I feel that the slightly harder seat of the Tama is less fatiguing and allows for better blood circulation, but the Gibraltar is certainly not bad in this respect either. The velvet cloth on top is of a lovely texture: natural feeling thickness and softness. Hopefully it will last long. The velvet on my Tama stool feels more synthetic and sandpaper-like, although that gives great grip as well. The Gibraltar foam has some memory effect, but keeps pushing back just enough not to loose its sitting-ball function.
Metal finishing and cloth sewing are all of very high quality. It's a heavy stool compared to most others, but if you intend not to travel too much with it this is only a good thing. In case the top might wear out you can simply buy another. I expect a very long life out of the metal work and mechanisms. All in all I am very happy with this stool.
Please note that the drum key that you need for the memory lock is not included, so it's better to order one with it if you don't have one. Thomann has a nice one on offer for a low price. The Gibraltar 9608D Drum Throne is made in Taiwan. This is something I would have liked to know in advance of buying (like I always wish to know where some product is being made).
