The Epiphone Les Paul Studio sports a hip gothic look (black body, black hardware), and is based on the "Studio" models of its big American sister. Two humbuckers and the set-in neck provide the well-known warm Les Paul sound, making it the ideal guitar for anyone with a pendant for gloomy heavy metal sounds with a decent "belly portion".
First up, I am not a guitarist, I am a bass player first and foremost. i do some home recording though so I wanted to add some very basic guitar into the mix. I did a bit of research and referred to a few guitarist friends and the unanimous feeling was that and Epiphone was probably the best way to go in terms of covering my needs.
I can definitely say this didn't disappoint. Its a Les Paul style body with 2 open coil pick ups and a 3 way switch (as is the norm) that give some nice variations in sound before you even add pedals into the equation. The black matt finish on the body, the black headstock and hardware all make this an awesome guitar to look at but it packs a powerful punch sonically as well.
There are no dot inlays on the neck (the only noting is the XII on the twelvth fret to donate the octave) so probably not ideal for starting out but again gives it a distinctive look.
I thought I'd move to the realm of Les Pauls - every self-respecting guitarist should know how to work their way around a Les Paul. I opted for this one to be my first.
It was not necessarily a good idea. Epiphone Les Paul Studio Gothic did not seem to live up to the expectations raised by The Gothic Explorer and the Gothic V. The sound was almost too dark for my tastes (I tried a pair of EMG 81's on it - didn't show a significant improvement).
That said, the stock pickups in this baby seem to be the same that are on the other Epiphone Gothic models - meaning you get a dark tone with a nice top end bite. The guitar won't outright roar, but it offers you this warm grumble that is sure to complement your tube-roaring distortion.
Controls are typically Les Paul so there's not much to add in that department.
Unfortunately, this guitar seems to fall short in the fun department aside from the way it looks - which is lovely.
