WM
Incredibly comfortable bass with a beautiful and rich sound
Wess Music 15.02.2024
There are various YouTube reviews for this bass. some of them focus on the hum/noise that is produced when the bridge pickup is soloed and the active electronics is on. These are videos from this instrument's very initial market release. I admit, I was worried, so I decided to contact Thomann's guitar department and they replayed that with the instruments they have at disposal, this issue has been resolved.
And indeed! Thank you Herr Hartwig!

The single coil can't be absolutely quiet, but nothing annoying is noticeable in normal use, even with boosted electronics at 70%. On headphones and at 100% bass and treble these problems can be detected, but it's still a boost of 18 dB, which is unusual!

The P-pickup is absolutely quiet, even boosted at +18dB treble and bass together!
It is 10.5 kOhm, and the J-pickup is 9.50 kOhm. Both in parallel are about 5.65 kOhm.

I inquired with Thomann about the strings because in one of the videos a Sadowski representative from Cologne says they are theirs. Yes, although without the blue braid on the label, the bass label states that they are exactly that and they SOUND like that too!

The Thomann photos show that the bridge is the most basic, but what a pleasant surprise I was to find that it is the same as the one in the MetroLine series (very hefty, with hemispherical saddles). Brilliant performance and easy to set up. The tuning keys are also comfortable, stable and branded.

Admittedly, I was prepared for any compromises on the neck and fingerboard, but both are beautifully made. The frets are clean and there is not a single sharp edge on them - not a single one! Comparing them to my Warwick PS Corvette Bubinga 5 string that I bought last year, the MetroExpress craftsmanship is absolutely outstanding. I've shown it to colleagues and they can't believe how, for the price, such finesse has been made to the visible details in the name of playability.

I set it up with roughly medium action G-2.00mm D-2.25mm A-2.75 E-3.00mm —. No buzzing, even when played with relatively firm pressure or with fingernails, as with the guitar. Since the body is made of okoume, the bass is relatively light, yet stable. The neck has a tendency to fall down, but nothing problematic on the 4 string bass, especially since it will be used with a strap.

Weaknesses (not critical):
The shielding is with dense conductive copper paint, i.e. it's not copper sheet, but still does a wonderful job and doesn't need any further refinishing. What I don't like though is that it's applied roughly.
The balance pot was weakened and needed to be fixed so that the white marker was in the same direction as all the other pots when maxed. Work in 2-3 minutes.
The input jack turned out to be deep for cables with thicker lugs like the Cordial CCFI 6.0 PR. I opened the battery compartment and fixed it so it works fine. Otherwise, with good BOSS cables, it works flawlessly.
The only thing that really irritates aesthetically is the stupid decision not to use the usual brand logo on the headstock. Well, there are ways to change that as well, as it already is with the next series from summer-autumn 2023, but which is twice as expensive (I find it so far in the USA, France and Italy).
Why?
Here's what it essentially delivers in terms of sound and performance:
Noiseless J pickup
The shielding is made of copper sheets
The preamp when switching from passive to active mode preserves the volume (in this model, an increase of about 3-4 dB is noticeable).
In terms of aesthetics - the frets are recessed, as in the Warwick,
The fingerboard is roasted maple
The Sadowsky logo is inscribed, though illegible due to the clumsiness of putting a black logo on dark brown roasted maple.

In summary — a very nice PJ bass. The budget my son had to fit into was around €1300. This bass was preferred not because of its price over the Sandberg Electra, Marcus Miller P8 and Fender Player Plus, but because of the ease of playing and the versatility of its sound palette. The money saved went towards Adams monitors, a Universal Audio Volt 476 and other necessary home studio gear for a 17 year old cellist who now wants to play bass!

I highly recommend it.
