Harley Benton R-457FFB Roasted MultiScale

For months I have been asking myself, do I really need a few more multiscale guitars? Then one day this beauty showed up on the Harley Benton Instagram and made the decision for me. I ordered this along with the R-458FFB on the day they were released. That was on a Tuesday, and I had them in my hands in Canada the following Monday, excellent service as always from Thomann.

The chameleon finish on this guitar is my all-time favourite guitar finish, so I might be a little biased due to that. The look isn't for everyone, and if it's not for you, that's ok, but I happen to love it. The satin finish on the neck of this guitar feels great to play and looks great on the roasted maple.

Fretwork and setup were fantastic out of the box. Action was a little high for me but was easily lowered without running into any fret buzz.

I won't say much about the sound of this guitar. I'm of the mind that pickups don't really matter and the only difference expensive brand name pickups make is a bigger hole in your wallet. These pickups are not microphonic, and they aren't noisy, that works for me. It sounds like a 7 string.

Hardware is on point. Like every guitar I buy, I swapped in some locking tuners before putting on some fresh strings. I don't see any need to change anything else.

Now, all that said, is this a perfect guitar? No. There are some minor finish flaws around the edge of the body and on the back of the neck. Do they bother me that much? No. It's important to remember that you can buy 5 of this guitar for the price of a similarly spec'd guitar from one of the "big brands"

Overall, Harley Benton knocks it out of the park again with an instrument that punches well above it's price point. I have over a dozen HBs now and will not hesitate to buy a dozen more.

La guitarra es posiblemente la mejor oportunidad de probar una guitarra de 7 cuerdas, fanfret y mastil "baked maple". La guitarra que recibí tenía claramente imperfecciones en los trastes, una nota muerta que salta al siguiente traste y una nota que trastea bastante. Nada grave que uno no pueda resolver, pero es algo a notar. El fretboard tiene algunos golpes y marcas de herramientas no muy guapos, pero es bonito igualmente. Dos o tres trastes tiene directamente golpes, algunas manchas de cola y dos o tres rayones en el cuerpo de la guitarra. Los trastes rascan, cuestión de pulirlos uno, o tocar horas y horas :).

El setup de la guitarra era muy bueno y cómodo.

Si no has probado una guitarra de 7 cuerdas esta tiene varias ventajas: es liviana, los pickups no son terribles, son en realidad bastante flexibles, y es cómoda al tacto, la cavidad parece tener bastante espacio para un upgrade de pickups con push-pull, or activas, o un switch de 5 posiciones para coil split.

Los pickups dan buen juego, y el volumen y tono son suaves y graduales. Dependiendo del setup que uses, pueden dar tonos de rock clásico, tonos tipo Animals as Leaders (sin el coil split pero parecido), limpios estilo piezo (Polyphya, AAL) y por sonidos tipo Djent/Thall. También, teniendo humbuckers puedes lograr tonos más de jazz, o como Allan Holdsworth, en mi caso usando un Yamaha DGStomp y MagicStomp con los patches de Allan Holdsworth.

Un cambio de cuerdas es algo a considerar, pero posiblemente no urgente, .10 o .11 son opciones relativamente asequibles y que pueden mejorar la experiencia con el instrumento.

LEER EDIT luego de 3 días

Luego de 3 días de uso el perno que sostiene la correa se soltó, estaba sentado así que no se ha caído, pero al ver cómo estaba montado el perno se aprecia claramente que o se usó una broca mas grande, o posiblemente se hizo de una manera torpe, y el tornillo estaba flojo. No había tenido problemas anteriormente pero no es para nada un detalle, y si no hubiera sentado posiblemente la casca la guitarra y ni garantía ni nada....

Pero Thomann, como siempre con el mejor trato, tramitaron un cambio, y me enviaron una guitarra sin ningun problema, sin trastes tocados, nada. Algo de marcas normal, pero buena calidad. Posiblemente un upgrade de pickups le vendría bien, pero sirven bastante bien, y tiene mucha pegada, así que cuidadito con sus amplis, que tiene bajos para rato.

Non è la prima HB che compro ma è la prima volta che mi arriva una chitarra (nuova non B-stock) con dei difetti così importanti

A livello estetico niente di cui lamentarsi ma appena l'ho provata, mi sono ritrovato un "fret buzz" spaventoso che la rendeva quasi insuonabile in buona parte della tastiera.

In più, il lavoro sui tasti: la carta vetrata su un muro faceva un suono più piacevole. Veramente fastidioso.

Alla fine, l'ho portata dal liutaio di fiducia e ho fatto sistemare tutto.
Chiaramente non pretendo che a questo prezzo mi arrivi una bomba di chitarra con dei suoni fantastici, ma se compro qualcosa che è venduto come nuovo, mi aspetto almeno che funzioni correttamente.

Magari sono stato sfortunato.
