Living in a rented apartment I am unable to do a great deal in the way of room treatment in the bedroom that I am using to produce in. So along with what treatment I have done so far (which really should be the first step in getting good sound in any environment) I decided to try to use some speaker calibration software to get rid of the terrible bass that I was experiencing from my monitors (mostly due to a bad ceiling design/construction that I can't do much about).
I decided to go for the ARC system as it is priced very competitively.
I am very surprised at how well it has corrected my monitors and I am now hearing a very flat response with a very good stereo image in the mid range in this very difficult room.
I have taken 2 calibration measurements so far and have them saved as presets. They both turned out pretty much the same.
Switching on the ARC plug-in is like night and day and I feel that I can trust the results of what I am listening to much more. Also, you can select various presets like '80's white' or 'car stereo' that are very useful too. Along with the use of various headphone models that I am using too, I feel that I have a fighting chance of getting more accurate mixes from my system until such time that I can put together a better environment to work in.
However, even in a good room, I believe that the ARC software would be of great benefit as it would help put the icing on the cake.
Bear in mind, all that is in the box is the microphone! To get the software you have to create an IK multimedia account, download their installer and then the software which will show up in the installer/you account. It's a bit confusing at first but actually the same process that most music software companies are using now.
The calibration process is worth taking some time over. You can do a quick 7 step measurement but I did two 14 step measurements and made sure that my speakers were correctly placed to begin with and I measured the mic positions accurately in relation to my speakers/workspace/seating position.
