Movies soundtracks get as much recognition as the movie itself, and with good reason &#8211; we can&#8217;t forget those memorable Ennio Morricone OSTs (Original Sound Tracks) that turned good movies into masterpieces. In <strong>The<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Irishman<\/strong>, <strong>Scorsese&#8217;s<\/strong> attention to detail went one step further, having his team re-create the sound of every single car featured in the movie to match the real world version of it &#8211; this required several days on the field, recording the <strong>engine<\/strong> <strong>sounds<\/strong> from different rented cars. Inside those studios, people are <strong>stomping<\/strong>, <strong>jumping<\/strong>, <strong>beating<\/strong> stuff or <strong>shouting<\/strong> while checking the footage in real-time. <strong>Wooden doors<\/strong> that haven&#8217;t seen oil in ages are used to mimic the &#8220;<strong>creaky boat<\/strong>&#8221; effect, for example.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The Hateful Eight&#8221;<\/strong> is a great example: since Tarantino had to <strong>re<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>record<\/strong> <strong>dialogues<\/strong> (which is something he doesn&#8217;t like to do), all the <strong>ambient<\/strong> <strong>noises<\/strong> were gone too. His sound editor spent <strong>over 200 hours<\/strong> to re-create every-single noise, from the simple <strong>footsteps<\/strong> of every character walking on the scene to <strong>scrapes<\/strong>, <strong>clangs<\/strong>, <strong>chair movements<\/strong> and much much more. There&#8217;s a whole team dedicated to that, that makes sure that every part of the <strong>speeches<\/strong> and <strong>talking<\/strong> is crystal clear.<\/p>\n<p>To guarantee a <strong>good<\/strong> <strong>result<\/strong>, is a common practice to have the extras being completely <strong>silent<\/strong>. Even if there&#8217;s a scene where a crowd is supposed to make noise, they will only <strong>mime<\/strong> that &#8211; the cheering sounds and the yelling are added in <strong>post<\/strong>, in order to focus, during the filming, on the main <strong>characters<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>dialogue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Mixing everything together<\/h2>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z&#8211;J_eZZvkY<\/p>\n<p>The final part is the <strong>mixing<\/strong> process: similar to what happens in <strong>music mixing<\/strong>, it&#8217;s aim is to bring down the louder noises, raise the lower ones and have a nice balance of <strong>speech<\/strong>, <strong>effects<\/strong>, <strong>noises<\/strong> and background <strong>music<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The choice of mixing is also an artistic tool to better convey the message of the movie: on &#8220;<strong>There Will Be Blood<\/strong>&#8220;, mixer <strong>Michael<\/strong> <strong>Semanick<\/strong> utilised the soundtrack <strong>rawness<\/strong> to intensify the sense of violence in the movie. When the oil rig explodes, a mix of quiet and loud moments contributes to a sense of restlessness. A <strong>work<\/strong> of <strong>art<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The end result? You decide<\/h2>\n<p>There are good movies and then there are <em>great<\/em> movies. Can you recall one of them that gave you <strong>goosebumps<\/strong>?
