Some of them are amazingly good or refreshingly different while with others you don’t even know that they are covers. Still others, however, would have been better kept untouched. Is it possible to outdo Whitesnake<\/strong><\/a>? In our opinion… yes. The vocal performance of Lzzy Hale<\/strong> here is incredibly <\/strong>and undeniable powerful<\/strong> and lends itself well to this iconic piece. The musical part, then, adapts perfectly to her energy<\/strong> and creates an overall effective cover version. The only criticism here is towards the similarity of the two genres, which, some may say, is not that adventurous.<\/p>\n

Let’s go punk<\/strong>: here, the band Millencolin<\/strong> is dedicated to the classic Every Breath You Take<\/em> by The Police<\/strong><\/a>. While Sting<\/strong> & co. are known for their perfection and exceptional musical skill and are more than recognised, the punk version is rather dirty<\/strong>, edgy<\/strong> and murderously fast<\/strong>. It’s worth having a listen.<\/p>\n

Ty Segall<\/strong> and his backing band, The Freedom Band<\/strong>, have taken Hot Chocolate<\/strong><\/a>‘s 1978 R&B<\/strong> hit Every 1’s A Winner<\/em> and “rockified” it after steeping it in the Southern California garage rock<\/strong> sound. The result is, at least, Hot Chocolate spiked with whisky. That drum sound<\/strong> and guitar tone<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

One of the classics from the early days of hard rock<\/strong> is Born To Be Wild<\/em>\u00a0by Steppenwolf<\/strong><\/a>. Slayer<\/strong>, who have often been covered themselves, put their thrash metal<\/strong> stamp on the song and let it sound a lot harder<\/strong> and more aggressive<\/strong>. The result was more than successful.<\/p>\n

Anyone who can make people believe that the cover song is the original has done a damn good job. Johnny Cash<\/strong> did it with Hurt<\/em>. He knitted an impressively emotional<\/strong> ballad<\/strong> from the Nine Inch Nails<\/strong><\/a> title. A great rock ballad whose cover version is better known than the original<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Yes, this Gershwin<\/strong><\/a> classic<\/strong> has been covered by way too many artists but Janis Joplin<\/strong> did an extraordinary job with her unmistakable raspy voice<\/strong> and more-than-passionate<\/strong> delivery<\/strong>. She squeezed the essence out of every word while guitarist James Gurley<\/strong> blasted every note to complement her perfectly. You hear this musical alchemy<\/strong> once and it’s hard to forget…<\/p>\n

Definitely a highlight on her 2004 album, Let It Die<\/strong><\/em>, Secret Heart <\/em>is actually a song which was originally written by Canadian rocker Ron Sexsmith<\/strong><\/a> in 1995. Leslie<\/strong> Feist<\/strong> does it more than justice in her studio recording (and live versions), just check out her performance<\/strong> in the video above<\/strong>, so much feeling<\/strong>!<\/p>\n
