There is hardly a genre between jazz, rock, blues, country, pop and more, in which it is not responsible for the <strong>low frequency range<\/strong>. There were many practical reasons why it was invented in the first place and was intended to displace the <strong>double bass<\/strong> from the stage. Welcome to our<strong> timeline of bass evolution<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Why the double bass became the electric bass<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-432113\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2222\/05\/Double-to-P-bass.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2222\/05\/Double-to-P-bass.png 600w, https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2222\/05\/Double-to-P-bass-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Until <strong>60 years ago<\/strong>, the low frequency range in live music was still reserved for the<strong> double bass<\/strong>. In jazz, swing, blues, and later also in rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll, the <strong>bands became louder<\/strong> because, suddenly, <strong>drums<\/strong> and <strong>electric guitars<\/strong> were integrated into popular music. And in this thunderstorm you had to be able to keep up as a bass player. A double bass cannot deliver such <strong>volume<\/strong> due to its construction, so the electric bass stepped in, <strong>assertively<\/strong>, and took its place (in many genres).<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The pragmatic transport problem<\/h3>\n<p>The double bass was &#8211; and still is &#8211; a wicked instrument, but at the same time a monster due to its <strong>dimensions<\/strong> and <strong>weight<\/strong>.\u00a0The <strong>club<\/strong> and <strong>live scene<\/strong> became highly active and music was being played on every corner. The double bass, however, was <strong>difficult to transport<\/strong>, a logistical problem of the musical kind. How do you get such a colossus from one job to the next? But trained bassists were always in short supply. The guitarists were offered gigs as double bass players, but they often couldn&#8217;t play them, especially since they would have had to retrain for the &#8220;<strong>vertical<\/strong> monster instrument&#8221;. A solution for this was needed and, coincidentally, bassists wanted to be <strong>mobile<\/strong>. This was made possible by the <strong>horizontal<\/strong> <strong>construction<\/strong> and <strong>playing position<\/strong>. They could simply hang the electric bass over their shoulders. A correct <strong>intonation<\/strong> especially for faster passages was difficult to achieve. A double bass does not have <strong>frets<\/strong> for orienting oneself, but even here a sensible solution was obvious. The experience with fretted string instruments was, after all, already available on guitars &#8211; both acoustic and electric. Due to sophisticated techniques in the manufacturing process, <strong>brighter sounds<\/strong> , which are more popular today, are possible with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/strings_for_electric_bass.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>roundwound strings<\/strong><\/a>. The first electric basses had more of a similar sound to the double bass. For this reason they were equipped with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/flatwound_strings_for_bass.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>flatwound strings<\/strong><\/a> that were very close to the <strong>gut strings<\/strong> (yes, guts, from <strong>animal intestines<\/strong>) of the double bass.<\/p>\n<p>The strings on a double bass are so fat that the fingers are subjected to a great deal of strain, especially when <strong>slapping<\/strong>. It is quite common for bassists to <strong>tape their fingers<\/strong>. It&#8217;s different with the electric bass. In <strong>1951<\/strong> the now legendary <strong>Fender Precision Bass<\/strong> came into the shops. The naming &#8220;Precision&#8221; referred to the fact that the first frets made precise intonation possible when playing.<br \/>\nThe <strong>P-Bass<\/strong> was an absolute <strong>revolution<\/strong> especially for <strong>live musicians<\/strong>. Sure, the double bass was one of the most popular instruments in the early 20th century, in the bands it had its permanent place for the low frequencies. However, with its dimensions it was really difficult to transport. On board they only had <strong>a single-coil pickup<\/strong> and a simple <strong>tone control<\/strong> with <strong>one volume and one tone control<\/strong> each. The treble could be reduced to get the sound quite close to that of a double bass.<br \/>\nAnother decisive argument was that the electric bass was far<strong> less susceptible to feedback<\/strong>. Thanks to the <strong>electromagnetic pickups<\/strong>, the vibrations of the <strong>steel strings<\/strong> could now be precisely picked up, amplified and reproduced via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/bass_amplifiers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>amp<\/strong><\/a> and speaker. Over the years <strong>5-string<\/strong>, <strong>6-string<\/strong> and other <strong>exotic variants<\/strong> have developed. In the course of the optimised sound possibilities and the improved playability, the electric bass also made the important step from strictly a &#8220;foundation&#8221; in the band to a <strong>solo instrument<\/strong>. And as can be observed in music despite all the innovations, the <strong>&#8217;50s- and &#8217;60s-inspired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/search_dir.html?sw=Fender+bass+60s+50s+reissue&amp;smcs=03a5b1_890\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reissue models<\/a><\/strong> continue to be some of the most popular.
