Most of us know the terms “Heavy<\/strong> Metal<\/strong>” and “Death Metal<\/strong>“. But not everyone can really explain the differences. Some of them have other sub-concepts on the radar like Thrash<\/strong> or Black<\/strong> Metal<\/strong>. And then there are various subgenres<\/strong> from the full steam department, which are only known to the specialists among the metalheads<\/strong>. Here come 10 subgenres<\/strong> with (attempted) explanations and musical examples:<\/p>\n

Pirate Metal<\/strong> as a subgenre of Heavy Metal incorporates the pirate mythology<\/strong> into music and stage performance. Elements of Thrash<\/strong>, Speed<\/strong> and Folk<\/strong> Metal<\/strong>, sometimes taking influence from sea shantys<\/strong>, is what you may hear distinguish. Also, typical folk instruments,<\/strong> like the concertina,<\/strong> are often used.<\/p>\n

At first glance, the name seems a little confusing. This Metal variation is not very “funny”. On the contrary. The tempo is rather slow and underpinned by orchestral soundscapes<\/strong>. Over and over again synthesized church organs<\/strong> and violins <\/strong>play to the\u00a0guttural vocals<\/b>. Wistful<\/strong> and monotonous<\/strong> the lyrics deal with depression<\/strong> and dark themes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Viking Metal<\/h3>\n

Black Metal<\/strong> and Death Metal combined<\/strong> with Scandinavian folklore,<\/strong> plus lyrics that tell of the sagas<\/strong>, battles<\/strong> and mythologies<\/strong> of the Vikings<\/strong>: We are already in the middle of the subgenre that bears the name Viking Metal<\/strong>. In addition, there are partly epochal sounds<\/strong> and vocals with screams<\/strong> typical of Black Metal,<\/strong> the growling,<\/strong> but also the vocals with a clear voice<\/strong>. Gladly in unison like in the classic sailor songs.<\/p>\n

At the end of the ’90s<\/strong>, the Depressive Black Metal<\/strong>, also known as Suicidal Black Metal<\/strong>, emerged from Black Metal. Typical are the slow tempo<\/strong>, simple drum rhythms<\/strong> and the special guitar playing<\/strong>. Trademark for the vocals is a reverberated screaming<\/strong>, which can easily rattle your soul. SBM is the setting of sadness and the longing for a way out.<\/p>\n

As the play on words of the name already suggests, this subgenre is a combination of Black Metal<\/strong> and Rock ‘n’ Roll<\/strong>. Two musical styles that at first sight hardly seem to fit together, however the interplay of the two genres works very well and is characterized by its very special drive<\/strong> with sounds of the harder variety.<\/strong> Midnight<\/strong> are considered the uncrowned kings of Black ‘n’ Roll.<\/p>\n

A real crossover genre is folk<\/strong> metal<\/strong>. Also here two styles are thrown into one pot, which actually have nothing to do with each other. The representatives of this subgenre always let folkloric elements<\/strong> – and also such instruments<\/strong> – flow in. Mostly these elements have their origin in European folk music<\/strong>. Incidentally, these bands often emerge from rural<\/strong> areas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Out of Doom<\/strong> Metal<\/strong> on the one hand and Death Metal<\/strong> on the other comes Death Doom Metal.\u00a0 The bands slowed down the tempo<\/strong> and created a mood suitable for the minimalist<\/strong>, but rather evil<\/strong> and hateful<\/strong>, riffs. It’s the combination of melancholic<\/strong>, dark<\/strong> passages<\/strong> with rapid<\/strong> beating<\/strong>, deep growls<\/strong> and guttural vocals<\/strong>. The first band of this subgenre was the Pennsylvanian-born Dream Death<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The vocals<\/strong> are also rich in contrast<\/strong>. Roaring<\/strong> and clear vocals<\/strong>, speaking<\/strong> and whispering<\/strong> are combined into a harmonious whole.<\/p>\n

War<\/strong> is the theme of the subgenre Battle Metal<\/strong>. The bands use all musical possibilities to make their songs sound dark<\/strong> and oppressive<\/strong>. For example, the rhythm<\/strong> is constructed in such a way that one really has the feeling of being on a battlefield<\/strong>. Lyrically, visually and sonically everything is directed towards the concept of war. No wonder why the listeners get a black shiver down their spine…<\/p>\n
