We’re talking about “Musical Roads” a phenomena popping up in various countries around the world. Bringing music to the mundane task of driving… ?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What on Earth are you talking about?<\/h3>\n

Well in the last twenty-five years, people have been building musical roads<\/strong>. “A musical road is a road, or part of a road<\/strong>, which when driven over<\/strong> causes a tactile vibration<\/strong> and audible rumbling<\/strong> transmitted through the wheels into the car body in the form of a musical tune<\/strong>.” (Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>). Sounds simple enough… and very groovy<\/strong>, literally. The different notes<\/strong> are created by making small grooves<\/strong> in the asphalt<\/strong> and the note changes according to the width of these grooves,<\/strong> between 5 to 10 cm wide<\/strong>. If a car drives at a constant speed, closer-spaced grooves increase the pitch and wider-spaced grooves lower the pitch. Here is a closeup photo<\/strong> of a small section of a musical road:<\/p>\n

Where and when did this start?<\/h3>\n

The Musical Road was invented in Denmark<\/strong> in 1995<\/strong> by two artists, Steen Krarup Jensen<\/strong> and Jakob Freud-Magnus<\/strong>. They called this “road instrument” an\u00a0Asphaltophone<\/strong> and made it by laying down a series of raised pavement markers, similar to Botts’ dots<\/strong>, spaced out at the right intervals to make an arpeggio in the key of F Major<\/strong> play when driven over them.
