Brass instruments are instruments that are made of brass, right? Sounds logical but it isn’t true in every sense and very often woodwinds such as the saxophone and even clarinets are mistakenly thrown into the brass category. Let’s discuss a selection of the most common brass instruments: What are their peculiarities? Here are a few tips, thoughts and sound samples, just for you!<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Cornet – universally popular<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Maybe it’s because the cornet<\/strong> is the smallest<\/strong> of the traditional brass instruments, but one thing is clear: it is the most played instrument among brass musicians<\/strong>. About 30%<\/strong> are using this icon of brass instruments. The cornet has a relatively lyrical<\/strong>, velvety<\/strong> and round<\/strong> sound<\/strong> and blends harmoniously into the brass section<\/strong>. A slight distinction is found between the smaller Eb cornet<\/strong><\/a> and the larger Bb cornet<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(listen to the audio sample<\/strong> below). For high notes<\/strong> the cornet reaches its natural limits<\/strong>. In addition, many musicians agree that it is difficult to play<\/strong> because of the deeper, V-shaped cup<\/strong> in the mouthpiece<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

2. Trumpet – in the first row<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The trumpet<\/strong><\/a>, a close relative of the cornet: The playing style is similar, almost identical, apart from the somewhat different approach. The trumpet is longer<\/strong> and delivers<\/strong> a<\/strong> brighter<\/strong>, more present and clearer tone<\/strong>. For this reason alone it is preferred in the brass section as a soloist<\/strong>. And in terms of volume<\/strong>, the trumpet is also far more dominant<\/strong>. The notes snap less easily<\/strong> than with a cornet, making jazzy, “half-muted” <\/strong>and\u00a0“coloured” notes<\/strong> easier to play.<\/p>\n

3. Flugelhorn – the versatile, well-sounding one<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Another relative of the brass family is the flugelhorn<\/a>.<\/strong> Basically, the style of playing also does not differ from the trumpet or the cornet, however this claim is debatable. The most significant difference<\/strong> lies in the mouthpiece.<\/strong> A flugelhorn mouthpiece, with a comparatively large inner bore<\/strong>, leads to higher air consumption<\/strong> and air use<\/strong>. Actually, it should swing the sound pleasantly due to the lower blowing resistance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

4. Alto \/ Tenor Horn – the joyful harmony<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A pretty good-natured comrade is the Tenor<\/strong>\u00a0Horn <\/strong>(usually in Eb<\/strong> or Bb);<\/strong> in terms of its sound character, it’s not usually a brass instrument that is put in the foreground. Rather, it is mostly used as a typical accompanying<\/strong> instrument<\/strong>. On the Eb horn, the bell<\/strong> and the mouthpiece<\/strong> are both directed upwards<\/strong>; therefore it is\u00a0easy to play sitting down<\/strong>. The tenor horn acts as a bridge in the brass section, adding beautiful\u00a0harmony<\/strong>\u00a0to the composition.<\/p>\n

5. Euphonium – good voicing in the mid-tone section<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The euphonium<\/strong><\/a> sings one octave lower than the trumpet<\/strong> and one higher than the tuba<\/strong>. This instrument requires a special mouthpiece<\/strong> with\u00a0cup sizes<\/strong> that are usually deeper<\/strong> and more conical in nature<\/strong>. The most important difference to other brass instruments is the euphonium’s compensating<\/strong>\u00a0mechanism<\/strong>: Depending on the model, three or<\/strong>\u00a0four val<\/strong>ves<\/strong> are installed and this makes for\u00a0intonation<\/strong>\u00a0which is very good<\/strong> and differentiated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

6. Trombone – the infinite<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A typical<\/strong> instrument from the brass section is the trombone<\/strong><\/a>. It is generally said to be the easiest<\/strong> instrument of the brass family. The tones are not controlled by valves<\/strong>, but by the slide<\/strong> instead. And that not only allows these typical drawn tones<\/strong>, but also intermediate<\/strong> ones<\/strong>. In addition to the mastery of breathing and technique, having an excellent ear for pitch<\/strong> is one of the most important requirements<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

7. Tuba & Sousaphone – from deep down<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The sounds that come from a\u00a0tuba<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0are thunderous<\/strong> and other-worldly. <\/strong>Some people are even convinced that they come from Heaven above, which is ironic because the register is at the very bottom of the brass section<\/strong>. The special feature of these beasts is that they have three to six valves<\/strong> and a particularly wide scale length <\/strong>and\u00a0thus a much wider\u00a0bore<\/strong>. It is played via a wide<\/strong> and deep<\/strong> (cup<\/strong>– or bowl<\/strong>-shaped)\u00a0mouthpiece<\/strong>. There are many different designs, from the marching tune of the sousaphone<\/strong><\/a> to earth-shaking tones of the\u00a0contrabass<\/strong> tuba<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(BB-flat or CC tuba, see video below<\/strong>), which has at least a length of 580 cm<\/strong>. That’s almost six meters<\/strong> of brass in your hands!<\/p>\n
