That&#8217;s why <strong>Favio Ch\u00e1vez<\/strong> wanted to give music lessons to the children in the slums of <strong>Cateura, Paraguay<\/strong>. How can you make music when you don&#8217;t have the <strong>money<\/strong> for an <strong>instrument<\/strong>? Instruments made of recycled scraps were <strong>born out of necessity, <\/strong>through a\u00a0special kind of <strong>recycling <\/strong>called<strong> upcycling<\/strong> (where the new product is of greater value than the reused materials it&#8217;s made of). The instruments sounded good and were<strong> so much fun<\/strong> for the <strong>children<\/strong> that they very quickly improved their skills. Today they tour everywhere as &#8220;<strong>Orquesta de Reciclados de Cateura<\/strong>&#8221; and show the world that <strong>a garbage dump is no\u00a0 dead end<\/strong>. Their motto: &#8220;<strong>The world sends us garbage. About <strong>2,500 families<\/strong> live in and from this slum. Although, you can&#8217;t really call it &#8220;living&#8221;. There is <strong>no electricity or running water<\/strong>. There are <strong>no professional or personal\u00a0prospects<\/strong>. Everyday life is marked by <strong>hopelessness<\/strong> and <strong>poverty<\/strong>. Above the slum lies the smell of decay and fire. If it rains, the nearby <strong>river overflows and floods the neighbourhood<\/strong>. No future grows here; only one thing grows: the mountains of garbage.\u00a0Favio\u00a0decides to give <strong>music lessons<\/strong> to the kids of Cateura, but they have no money for instruments. He meets the <strong>garbage<\/strong> <strong>collector<\/strong> and <strong>former<\/strong> <strong>carpenter Don Cola Gomez<\/strong>, who has never seen or held a <strong>violin<\/strong> before. After someone describes the instrument to the uneducated slum dweller, Don Cola uses his <strong>talent<\/strong> <strong>for improvisation<\/strong> to take a <strong>paint can and a baking tray<\/strong> and make a violin out of them. The project with <strong>recycled<\/strong> <strong>instruments<\/strong> takes off. Other instruments are created, such as <strong>cellos<\/strong> with <strong>bodies made of oil drums<\/strong> and <strong>tuning pegs made of old hairbrushes<\/strong> and <strong>spoon handles.<\/strong> <strong>Plastic bowls<\/strong> turn into <strong>timpani<\/strong>, <strong>rain<\/strong> <strong>pipes<\/strong> into <strong>trumpets<\/strong>; <strong>tin<\/strong> <strong>cans<\/strong> turn into <strong>guitars<\/strong>. More and more kids come to his <strong>music school, built using donated money<\/strong>, and they simply enjoy the music. &#8220;When I hear the sound of a violin, I feel butterflies in my stomach,&#8221; says one of the young musicians, adding: &#8220;It&#8217;s a feeling that I can&#8217;t explain&#8221;. Another explains: &#8220;Because I make music, I don&#8217;t take drugs&#8221;. The ambitious and empathic idea gave rise to the &#8220;<strong>Orquesta de Reciclados de Cateura<\/strong>&#8221; &#8211; the <strong>Cateura Recycled Orchestra<\/strong>. Favio Ch\u00e1vez is a <strong>likeable<\/strong>, <strong>persistent<\/strong> and <strong>incredible person<\/strong> who <strong>uses music as a remedy for misery<\/strong>, exactly where it is needed most.
