{"id":35419,"date":"2016-11-22T18:45:36","date_gmt":"2016-11-22T17:45:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/?p=35419"},"modified":"2017-03-22T14:27:49","modified_gmt":"2017-03-22T13:27:49","slug":"metal-axes-overview-heavy-guitars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/en\/gear\/metal-axes-overview-heavy-guitars\/","title":{"rendered":"Metal Axes \u2013 an overview of Heavy guitars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>birth<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/heavy_guitars.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Heavy guitars<\/strong><\/a> dates back to <strong>1958 <\/strong>when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/gibson.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Gibson<\/strong><\/a> introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/heavy_guitars.html?sw=gibson%20explorer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Explorer<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/search_dir.html?bf=&amp;sw=gibson+flying&amp;viewMode=block\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Flying V<\/strong><\/a> which deviated from &#8216;traditional shapes\u2019 giving their guitars a modern touch. Initially, the guitars were designed for jazz musicians and as you may know the experiment was a complete failure, so much so that Gibson immediately stopped production, only to resume production in the late <strong>60&#8217;s<\/strong> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/search_dir.html?bf=&amp;sw=gibson+flying&amp;viewMode=block\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Flying V<\/strong><\/a> and mid <strong>70&#8217;s<\/strong> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/heavy_guitars.html?sw=gibson%20explorer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Explorer<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/heisse-aexte-ein-ueberblick-zu-heavy-gitarren-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-34200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/heisse-aexte-ein-ueberblick-zu-heavy-gitarren-1-110x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"81\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/11\/heisse-aexte-ein-ueberblick-zu-heavy-gitarren-1-110x300.jpg 110w, https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/11\/heisse-aexte-ein-ueberblick-zu-heavy-gitarren-1.jpg 147w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 81px) 100vw, 81px\" \/><\/a>The reason for this was that some Hardrock guitarists discovered these guitars with the jagged shapes for themselves. These two models can clearly be described as the original heavy guitar models, which were also copied by other manufacturers and released to the market in a slightly modified form. Such as the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/search_dir.html?bf=&amp;sw=rrxmg%20rhoads\" target=\"_blank\">Randy Rhoads model<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/jackson.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jackson<\/strong><\/a> was clearly based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/ausgefallene_modelle.html?sw=Gibson%20Explorer&amp;filter=true&amp;feature-231%5B0%5D=Flying%20V\"><strong>Flying V<\/strong><\/a>, but with a shortened &#8220;wing&#8221;. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/ibanez.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ibanez<\/strong><\/a> <strong>Iceman<\/strong>, which for a long time was the main guitar of Paul Stanley (Kiss) is strongly influenced by the shape of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/heavy_guitars.html?sw=gibson%20explorer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Explorer<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0. In the 1980s, came the metal boom, inviting more and more manufacturers to the scene, who were to a certain degree devoted to this Guitar Genre: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/charvel.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Charvel<\/strong><\/a><strong>\/<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/jackson.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jackson<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/dean_guitars.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dean<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/esp.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ESP<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/kramer_guitars.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Kramer<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<strong>Hamer<\/strong> and <strong>BC Rich<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/heavy_guitars.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Heavy guitars<\/strong><\/a> differ from &#8220;normal&#8221; guitars like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/st_models.html?filter=true&amp;manufacturer[0]=Fender\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Stratocaster<\/strong> <\/a>or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/search_dir.html?bf=&amp;sw=Les%20Paul\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Les Paul<\/strong> <\/a>on the one hand because of its extravagant body design, but in most cases also in their powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/humbucker_pickups.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Humbucker pickups<\/strong> <\/a>to draw out every bit of distortion from the amp. In the 1980s, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/search_dir.html?bf=&amp;sw=Floyd+Rose\" target=\"_blank\"> <strong>Floyd Rose tremolo system<\/strong><\/a> was extremely popular, although it slightly faded into the background again. During this time many bands experimented with different downtunings, which isn\u2019t always suitable to this system. With the rise of nu-metal style in the mid-1990s, guitars became tuned lower and 7-string instruments with a deep B-string evolved. One of the first production models was the <strong>Universe by<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/ibanez.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ibanez<\/strong><\/a>, co-developed by Steve Vai. In the meantime, eight-string guitars are no longer unusual, while competing with bassists thanks to the extra low notes<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The field of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/heavy_guitars.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>heavy guitars<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is now set quite wide and manufacturers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/dean_guitars.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dean<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/esp.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ESP<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/ibanez.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ibanez<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/jackson.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jackson<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/schecter.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Schecter<\/strong><\/a> are among the most popular brands.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><br \/>\nGuitarists and guitars<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are few genres that can boast so many icons such as metal, where almost all guitarists are considered true living legends. Many heavy metal guitarists have been collaborating for several years with various companies to create &#8220;signature&#8221; guitars, reflecting their own peculiarities and special requests. The shape of preference is a cross between an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/heavy_guitars.html?sw=gibson%20explorer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Explorer<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/ausgefallene_modelle.html?sw=Gibson%20Explorer&amp;filter=true&amp;feature-231%5B0%5D=Flying%20V\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Flying V<\/strong><\/a> and is usually fitted with two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/humbucker_pickups.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Humbucker pickups<\/strong><\/a>. Recently, Jackson also introduced the possibility to choose of configuring the pickups or bridge on a <strong>King-V<\/strong> model. Both are equipped with a <strong>Lundgren M8P Pickup<\/strong> (passive) and an <strong>Edge III-8 Tremolo System<\/strong>. Another special feature is the very long neck with a length of 749 mm. The guitars are equipped with an HSH (humbucker-single coil-humbucker) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/dimarzio.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>DiMarzio<\/strong><\/a> pickup configuration with a 686 mm scale and the lowest string is tuned down to E1(an octave below traditional guitars). For this reason, the Animals As Leaders don\u2019t have a bass player for their live performances.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">What is important for a heavy guitar?<\/h3>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nBody \/ Wood<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>The shape is of course primarily a matter of taste. Regarding body wood there are different approaches and no clear directions as tastes differ. Traditionally, mahogany is a good choice, which is characterized by excellent sustainability and a softer tone, which can be combined with aggressive sounding pickups. Basswood is also very popular with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/heavy_guitars.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>heavy guitars<\/strong><\/a>; this wood does not have so much sustain, but a very crisp, attack-driven sound, which can provide clarity with fast riffing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neck \/ Frets<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Necks are predominantly maple or mahogany and the fingerboard is primarily of rosewood. While this construction is quite standard, it\u2019s the neck profile which are of striking feature, because these are rather slim and the fretboard has less curvature. The <strong>string position<\/strong> should be fairly flat, to favour <strong>fast-paced playing<\/strong>. Medium jumbo or jumbo copies frets are first choice, especially the massive jumbo frets which are suitable for bends, because you have less surface friction on the fretboard. For this reason, <strong>Ritchie Blackmore<\/strong> or <strong>Yngwie Malmsteen<\/strong> used <strong>Scalloped Fretboards<\/strong> where the fretboard is deepened between the frets. The number of frets is also important for anyone who wants to play solo\u2019s in the high frets and should in any case have a guitar with 24 frets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tremolo or Fixed bridge?<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>The question is actually answered quickly, because if you work with various <strong>Downtuning<\/strong>, a <strong>free-floating<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/search_dir.html?bf=&amp;sw=Tremolo\"><strong>tremolo<\/strong><\/a> will not be fun, because when tuning a string in this system the neighboring strings are also influenced. The <strong>string tension<\/strong> is usually balanced by the <strong>tremolo springs<\/strong>, and so when only one element is changed, it also changes the rest.\u00a0So let&#8217;s just say going from <strong>standard tuning<\/strong> to <strong>drop D<\/strong> tuning is not as easy as it is with a fixed bridge. A fixed bridge is the only right choice for downtunings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/heisse-aexte-ein-ueberblick-zu-heavy-gitarren-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-34214\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/heisse-aexte-ein-ueberblick-zu-heavy-gitarren-11-300x116.jpg\" alt=\"Kahler K 7300 Black\" width=\"211\" height=\"78\" \/><\/a>However, fanatics of\u00a0<strong>Dive Bombs<\/strong> and lots of tremolo action, should have a stable tremolo system, a task which is left to many guitars with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/search_dir.html?bf=&amp;sw=Floyd+Rose\"><strong>Floyd Rose system<\/strong><\/a>. This way the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/strings.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>strings<\/strong><\/a> are clamped to the saddle and the fine tuners on the <strong>bridge<\/strong> are used when tuning and the virtual lack of friction allows for extreme detune-free <strong>tremolo movements<\/strong>. Another tricky point is the support surface at the bridge which is important for the right hand when using <strong>palm-muting techniques<\/strong>. For some guitarists the fine tuners of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomann.de\/gb\/search_dir.html?bf=&amp;sw=Floyd+Rose\"><strong>Floyd Rose<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0get in the way of this technique. Furthermore the pressure of their palm can move the bridge altering the tune.
