\u2744? When sound looks beautiful, it’s a paradox on the one hand, and simply brilliant on the other. The question arises: What do sounds actually look like? Which face do frequencies have? How does your head or a banana sound? With Cymatics, frequencies become visible. It is the unity of art, acoustics and science. \u2744?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fascination from the DIY Department<\/h3>\n

The keyword here is\u00a0cymatics,<\/strong> a term coined by Swiss<\/strong> philosopher\u00a0Hans Jenny<\/strong>\u00a0(1904-1972), and comes from the Greek word<\/strong> for “wave<\/strong>“.\u00a0It’s related to the visualization<\/strong> of sounds<\/strong> and waves<\/strong>. Imagine you are using a simple plate,<\/strong> for example made of glass<\/strong> or sheet metal<\/strong>. Now evenly sprinkle a fine powder<\/strong> on it, like flower pollen or fine sand. For the heavy metal fans among you: soot also works. Now make this powdered plate vibrate<\/strong> with, for example, a violin bow.<\/strong> The result is a graphic pattern:<\/strong> the wave phenomenon<\/strong>. Here is an example:<\/p>\n

Digital Evolution of Sound Visualization<\/h3>\n

The next step was to use loudspeaker membranes<\/strong> instead of simple surfaces for these sound images. And it didn’t take long before these spherical visualizations<\/strong> could be displayed on large\u00a0screens.\u00a0<\/strong>The CymaScope<\/strong> was the first “instrument” with which vibrations on water<\/strong> could be displayed multi-dimensionally<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

And the creative journey continues… Experiments<\/strong> are carried out with different media<\/strong> for the presentation of the resulting images. The artists of this genre are like illusionists<\/strong>, they use prisms<\/strong> in\u00a0 which patterns<\/strong>\u00a0are grouped to form an overall picture. They use torch flames<\/strong> that present cascading peaks, smaller or larger depending on the frequency<\/strong> of the keyboard<\/strong> or synth.<\/strong> Then there are touch-controlled oversized light bulbs<\/strong>, in which light flashes like lightning,<\/strong> or the oscillations and bends of a cymbal<\/strong> are visualized in slow motion. But what’s it good for?<\/h3>\n

This multi-dimensional visualisation <\/strong>is an\u00a0essential component in\u00a0electronic dance music <\/strong>(EDM<\/strong>). In the USA, EDM has for a long time been considered a “trend of the future” and the cymatics images<\/strong> are a natural\u00a0evolutionary component<\/strong> used in live performances<\/strong> as projections.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Besides their importance to EDM, cymatics have also been used in\u00a0medicine\u00a0<\/strong>since the 1960s.<\/strong> Although its use hasn’t been “officially” proven to work, cymatics can be used as Cymatherapy,<\/strong> a sort of vibration therapy,<\/strong> that is administered to patients in order to put\u00a0the resonance of their cells<\/strong> back into their natural frequency.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0The sound, as a coherent acoustic wave<\/strong>,\u00a0is driven by a transducer<\/strong> directly into body tissues,<\/strong> usually through the soles of the feet.<\/strong> There are many medical proofs of Cymatherapy helping with muscle<\/strong> and tendon injuries<\/strong>,\u00a0all kinds of\u00a0stress and inflammation relief<\/strong>\u00a0and even anti-aging<\/strong>.
