Sci-fi theme song<\/strong> or the communication with intergalactic worlds?<\/strong> Not the slightest problem with the theremin.<\/strong> When the unusual instrument was introduced, the press wrote with fascination, “that you can simply pull music out of thin air<\/strong>“. At first glance, the device looks almost meaningless: it is a small box<\/strong> with two antennas<\/strong> protruding from the top. Can sounds really come out of this thing? You bet! The theremin has disappeared several times in history from the public eye, maybe because many people doubted its capabilities. Some even claim that the instrument had a niche existence. The theremin<\/strong> is considered to be the first electronic musical instrument<\/strong> ever made, a legendary machine. It is also the only instrument in the world that can be played without needing to be touched<\/strong>! The magnetic field<\/strong> is changed by the varying distances between the two hands.<\/strong> One hand is responsible for the pitch,<\/strong> the other for the volume.<\/strong> Its allure increases considerably when you consider when the first version was released:\u00a01920<\/strong>! Next year this mystical device will celebrate its 100th birthday.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

2. Crossing borders between music & technology<\/h2>\n

According to experts, the inventor and manufacturer Lev Sergeyevich Termen<\/strong> was kidnapped by the Soviet secret service NKVD<\/strong> in 1938<\/strong> and taken back to the Soviet Union.<\/strong> After a stay in the infamous Magadan labour camp,<\/strong> he was transferred to a military research facility. Again and again the mystical sounds of the Theremin were used in thrillers<\/strong> and sci-fi movies. Alfred Hitchcock<\/strong> in 1945<\/strong> in “Spellbound”<\/strong> and Billy Wilder<\/strong> in the same year in\u00a0“The Lost Weekend”<\/strong> used the spacey instrument for their cinematic dramas.\u00a0The composer of the soundtrack was a certain Mikl\u00f3s R\u00f3zsa.<\/strong> Thus, the theremin had become the star of high-level\u00a0cinematography.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

4. Almost predestined for science fiction<\/h2>\n

And of course the Theremin has a cult\u00a0status<\/strong>\u00a0among fans of intergalactic worlds. It is particularly suitable for reproducing the theme song<\/strong> from\u00a0Star Trek,<\/strong> as can be seen and heard below:<\/strong><\/p>\n

5. Is the theremin a classic also in rock and pop?<\/h2>\n

In pop music,<\/strong> the theremin became known through the Beach Boys<\/strong> when, in 1968<\/strong>, they used the special effect in the song “Good Vibrations”.<\/strong> Other well-known artists who use the theremin in some songs include Sting, Tom Waits<\/strong> and Jean-Michel Jarre.<\/strong> Many wondered where the sounds came from. From 1953<\/strong> onwards Robert Moog<\/strong> dedicated himself to the theremin and founded his very first company. The goal was to assemble and sell kits for Theremin devices. The circuit technology was to be the foundation stone for the first voltage-controlled synthesizers.<\/strong> The legendary MiniMoog<\/strong> saw the light of day shortly afterwards. The Theremin is, so to speak, the ancestor of the Moog synth<\/a>.

7. Large fan base in Germany, Europe & worldwide<\/h2>\n

For many years there have been events<\/strong> where the theremin has been the focus, for example the\u00a0“Hands Off”<\/strong>\u00a0festival in England<\/strong> and the “Electromagnetica”<\/strong> festival in Chile.<\/strong> Even if the instrument is less known than the usual candidates, it still has a large following. For example, the Theremin Academy<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0regularly organises courses and seminars in Colmar <\/strong>(France)\u00a0and Berlin<\/strong>. Lydia Kavani,<\/strong> the grandniece of Lev Thermen, teaches in Oxford,<\/strong> for example.<\/p>\n

8. Pure fascination & super talent<\/h2>\n

Hardly anyone mastered the theremin as well as artist Barbara Buchholz.<\/strong> She got to know Lydia Kavina<\/strong> and was fascinated by the magic of this extraordinary instrument. In 2009 Barbara appeared on RTL’s show “Das Supertalent”<\/strong> and reached the semi-finals.<\/strong> After her performance, the people in the hall were so spellbound that the applause started only after a significant delay. Three years later the great artist unfortunately died of cancer.<\/p>\n
